The iPhone 14 is expected to bring perhaps the most significant upgrades in years. Here is what we currently know.
Speculation about Apple’s next iPhone 14 is increasing, and the new devices are expected to be the most significant in years. Many leaked images and specifications hint to the reintroduction of Touch ID as well as an updated primary camera and a speedier A16 Bionic processor.
The iPhone 14 Pro variants are said to include the most significant improvements, including under-display Face ID and a punch hole camera replacing the notch. USB-C connection is also an option. A new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max is likely to replace the small in Apple’s normal iPhone 14 range, as well.
According to our predictions for 2022, the iPhone 14 is a must-have phone. iPhone 14 is expected to be Apple’s most popular product in 2022, and here’s what we know so far about what we’d want to see from the company’s next flagships.
The release date and pricing of the iPhone 14
We haven’t heard anything about the iPhone 14’s release date yet. According to past Apple iPhone launches, the iPhone 14 will be unveiled in September 2022.
When it comes to the price, it’s impossible to forecast. Nonetheless, we expect the iPhone 14 will be priced in line with the iPhone 13’s starting price of $799 for the iPhone 13 and $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro. Although we can’t rule out the possibility of a bigger, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, we anticipate it to cost $899.
As a result, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max might cost up to $1,099 or more.
Leaks, on the other hand,
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to cost $1,099 and $1,199, respectively, according to ApplePro. This is a $100 premium above the iPhone 13’s list price. Anyone expecting to get their hands on a high-end version of the iPhone 14 will be stinging their wallets with this price increase.
When deciding between the iPhone 14 and 13, we’ve compiled a list of benefits of purchasing the iPhone 13 right now rather than waiting for its successor.
replacing the iPhone 14 small with the iPhone 14 Max
In spite of the iPhone 12 small’s apparent lack of sales, Apple introduced an iPhone 13 mini in the autumn of 2016. After then, Apple is said to be changing the iPhone 14 range for 2022, which might mean the end of the iPhone small. In addition to the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a bigger iPhone 14 Plus or Max is possible. As a result, there would be two iPhone 14 models and two iPhone 14s.
According to Jon Prosser, the iPhone 14 Max will be the next “small” phone, with just a 6.7-inch display and no pro capabilities and a price tag that would make it prohibitively expensive. Bigger and cheaper iPhones might be precisely what the doctor ordered for Apple’s loyal customers.
The iPhone 14 isn’t the only thing that’s predicted to undergo major changes in comparison to its predecessor. All of the most significant changes between the iPhone 13 and 14 have been detailed in our side-by-by-side comparison.
A look at the new iPhone 14’s design language
In the words of Jon Prosser and his Front Page Tech video, the iPhone 14 will appear like an iPhone 12 crossed with an iPhone 4. However, a mute button and a trio of circular volume buttons, reminiscent of the iPhone 4, might be included into those sides.
If true, the iPhone 14’s titanium body is said to make it more durable and sturdy than prior models, while the glass back will remain, albeit with a satin-like sheen.
There is also a possibility that the three rear cameras will be flush with the back of the iPhone 14 instead of protruding from the back. It’s possible, given recent developments in camera sensor and lens production.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also weighed in on the iPhone 14 rumours, claiming that the next Apple phone would include a “complete makeover” that sets it distinct from the iPhone 13. The biggest change in the next iPhone 14’s design will be the removal of the present notch in favour of a “hole-punch-sized” notch.
The iPhone 14 Pro series may be the only ones to get these modifications. Under-display Face ID and a hole-punch cutout for the notch have been shown by Apple leaker DylanDKT on Twitter.
Who knows what it may look like. An iPhone 14 Pro mockup was created by developer Jeff Grossman using a pill-shaped camera cutout instead of the notch. (According to some sources, Apple will ditch the circular phone cutout in favour of a more oval one.)
Display researcher Ross Young lent credence to this design by pointing out that the iPhone 14 Pro would include a pill-shaped notch. The selfie camera will be housed in a second circular punch-hole cutout, as Young revealed.
On YouTube, a new series of renderings from The Hacker 34 depicts what the iPhone 14 Pro may look like without the notch. In addition, the back of the phone displays cameras that are practically flush with the surface.
And a new render picture shows how a pill-shaped cutout would appear beside a normal selfie punch-hole camera. In an abstract sense, this design may potentially be rather appealing.
The iPhone 14’s screen
The iPhone 14 range is expected to be shaken up, with a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max expected to be released. So, no more 5.4-inch minis.
All iPhone 14 models should include a 120Hz refresh rate display, as seen on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, which is expected to be based on an LTPO panel or a subsequent iteration of that display technology.
Speculation has surfaced that the iPhone 14 Max, which might be referred to as the iPhone 14 Plus, would include a 120Hz refresh rate display. However, it’s not obvious whether the regular iPhone 14 will have a refresh rate of 60Hz or if it will be upgraded to a higher refresh rate.
LTPS displays are expected to be used in at least one iPhone 14 model, according to a report from The Elec. The lack of a fast-refreshing display on the basic iPhone 14 has been corroborated by subsequent supply chain reports.
Rumors of a 90Hz refresh rate for the next iPhone 14 and 14 Max have surfaced again. Even if the Pro model’s screens are quicker, this would be an upgrade over the iPhone 13 and 13 mini.
The iPhone 14 would also make sense to have an always-on display, considering that it was rumoured for the iPhone 13 but never made it into the current model of the device.
Touch ID on the iPhone 14
The reintroduction of Touch ID is expected to be one of the most important upgrades in the iPhone 14 over its predecessors. Instead of being built into a power button, it is expected to be placed beneath the iPhone 14’s display, much like many fingerprint sensors on the top Android phones.
Under-display Touch ID is said to be a new feature on the iPhone 13 Pro. Although this version of Touch ID is still being tested, the leaker made it plain that it’s “unclear” whether we’ll see it in the final product.
According to @PandaIsBald on Weibo, the iPhone 14 will not feature in-display Touch ID, therefore the verdict is still out as to how probable under-display Touch ID on the iPhone 14 will be. Another report, this time originating from LeaksApplePro @ iDropNews, has gone even farther in its speculation. Touch ID has apparently been scrapped from Apple’s plans, according to his sources, who claim that it won’t even be on the iPhone 14.
Instead, he believes that Apple is working on an under-screen solution for Face ID—though he thinks this won’t be ready until 2023, which would imply that the iPhone 15 would be released in that time frame.
The iPhone 14 has a total of 14 cameras.
iPhone 14 camera rumours are beginning to surface, and they’re starting to become fascinating. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 Pro would include a 48MP primary sensor, a significant upgrade over the iPhone 13’s 12MP camera.
Another leak has added validity to this claim, indicating that the iPhone 14 Pro will include a 48MP primary camera, as well as a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide angle lens. Research firm TrendForce, based in Taiwan, confirms that Apple cares about the quality of its primary camera, at least in the company’s Pro models.
While a larger primary sensor is always good, the iPhone’s telephoto lens falls below the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S21 in terms of quality. In fact, a secondary telephoto camera with a 10x optical zoom would be a great addition to Apple’s next iPhones.
Apple may be working on a periscope-style zoom camera for the iPhone 14, or at the very least for the Pro versions, according to a recent patent filing. Periscope cameras are expected to come in the iPhone 15 in 2023, according to Ming-Chi Kuo.
Battery life and recharge times for the iPhone 14
Only a few snippets of information have been released about the iPhone 14’s probable features. Apple’s A-series processor will be in the iPhone in 2022, we’re very certain. Apple’s rumoured A16 CPU is expected to give a significant performance gain over the A15 Bionic that is expected to power the iPhone 13.
the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 is expected to be replaced with a 4nm processor from TSMC, which would result in a much smaller and more energy-efficient iPhone 14. However, a new source suggests that TSMC is experiencing difficulties creating the smaller chips, which implies that the iPhone 14 might continue with a 5nm chipset. A three-year period with a similar system-on-chip size would be unprecedented for an iPhone.
Check out our thoughts on what an A16 Bionic processor in an iPhone 14 may mean to you, as analysts weigh in on the advantages and disadvantages of the technology.
In the wake of Apple’s purchase of Intel’s modem division, it’s feasible that the iPhone 14 may have an Apple-made 5G modem on board. In theory, this would provide Apple more control over both the performance of 5G and the battery life effect.
The iPhone 14 Pro, according to a new leak, would include 8GB of RAM. Because of Apple’s focus on efficiency, the iPhone 14 Pro might become an incredible powerhouse if it had more RAM than Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra. Even if you don’t think your existing iPhone is sluggish, adding the additional RAM can be considered overkill.
Analyst Jeff Pu, on the other hand, expects that all four iPhone 14 variants will include 6GB of RAM, which we find odd.
In terms of capacity, we’d anticipate Apple to go with the 128GB and 1TB Pro variants it introduced with the iPhone 13 series.
Rumor has said that the iPhone 14 will have a massive 2TB of internal storage. We doubt an iPhone will have the largest capacity on a smartphone to date, given that no Samsung phone provides this and they’ve historically been liberal with storage.
Additionally, according to a second note from Jeff Pu, the iPhone 14 and 14 Max will have 64GB of storage, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have 256GB of storage. Both are plausible, although the former is more likely than the latter, since it would take up half the capacity of a standard iPhone 13.
eSIM-only models of the iPhone 14 are also possible, according to estimates by GlobalDate analyst Emma Mohr-McClune. Users that require dual-SIM capabilities, such as businesspeople and international travellers, will benefit from the shift.
USB-C port on the iPhone 14
The iPhone 14 is said to include a USB-C connector instead of the Lightning port, which is a common rumour. As previously stated, Prosser has voiced scepticism. In contrast, several leakers have claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro will contain a USB-C port.
The days of the Lightning port may be numbered if the European Union succeeds in requiring device manufacturers to use standard charging and cable connectors by 2024. After all, Apple has a significant European presence. It’s not clear whether Apple will make such a step for the iPhone 14 before it goes on sale.
Since Apple’s iPads and MacBooks already have USB-C ports, we’d want to see USB-C connection as well. In the case of the iPhone, though, we know that Apple will stick to its guns, so we’ll hold off on making any predictions until additional rumours appear.
Version 14 of the iPhone’s software
In the event that Apple follows its usual pattern, the iPhone 14 will be preloaded with the latest version of Apple’s iOS software when it launches in the autumn. It is almost a certainty that the next version of iOS will be iOS 16. (unless Apple ditches numbers like it did with macOS).
The company’s annual developer conference, usually held in June, will likely be the first time we learn about any iOS 16 software improvements. Apple’s software development team is already very busy on iOS 15.2, which is set to arrive in December and deliver a slew of improvements to the iPhone.
iPhone 14 compared. iPhone 14 Pro
Everything we’ve heard about the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max so far suggests that they’ll be a class apart. As a result, only the pros will be able to provide telephoto zooms once again. Because the new iPhone 14 Pros are said to include in-display Touch ID, which would mean that the notch would be replaced with a punch hole display.
A 48MP primary camera is rumoured for the iPhone 14 Pro versions, which is more than double the 12MP camera that is slated for the ordinary iPhone 14. USB-C might replace the Lightning connector on all save the iPhone 14 Pro models. See our iPhone 14 versus iPhone 14 Pro comparison to learn more about the alleged changes between the two models.
Analyst Jeff Pu, however, thinks that all four iPhone 14 models will have a 120Hz display and all four will have 6GB of RAM.
What we’d want to see in the iPhone 14
This year’s iPhone rumours have been rated based on what we think are the most important features for Apple’s autumn devices. But here’s what we’d want to see on the iPhone 14 when it’s released.
Prosser’s renderings of the iPhone 14 reveal a new design that is rather appealing. This is hardly a major shift in Apple’s design style. Any though Apple’s phones are among of the most attractive, we’d want to see whether the company can go even farther in terms of design with the iPhone 14.
If the speculations are correct, the iPhone 14 might have a notch-free display, and we hope so. As long as it doesn’t affect the quality of the images or the accuracy of Face ID, an under-display camera would be welcome.
While an in-display sensor isn’t a certainty, we’re convinced that Apple will bring Touch ID back with the iPhone 14. A Touch ID sensor, similar to the one on the iPad Air, might be built inside the side-mounted power button.
Although Apple has always been a powerhouse, we’d like to see Apple go a little more into AI with its A-series CPUs, much as Google is slated to do with its Tensor chip in the Pixel 6 As a result, we may have a smarter, more responsive Siri, as well as smarter features that offer up the info or services iPhone 14 consumers want when they want them.
Better camera: The iPhone 13 Pro Max has one of the greatest cameras on the market, but we hope Apple will keep improving its camera technology and hardware. Even with the Pro Max’s current advantage, there’s not much separating it from competitors like the Google Pixel 6 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. It is our hope that the iPhone 14 camera and phone photography experience would sweep the floor with Android competition, compelling them to truly boost their photography game with the next-generation smartphones they release. Increasing zoom would also be beneficial.
