Touch ID may be dead in iPhone 14 rumours

According to a leaked report, the iPhone 14 and subsequent generations would not include Touch ID.

A new report claims that Apple’s iPhone 14 may not include the feature you were looking for. According to this one, the iPhone’s in-screen Touch ID has been scrapped by Apple engineers.

In the past, we’ve heard reports that the iPhone 14 would not have Touch ID, but this one is different. Instead of merely skipping the iPhone 14, LeaksApplePro reports on iDropNews that Apple is scrapping plans to add Touch ID on all future iPhones.

LeaksApplePro claimed, “I can now confirm Apple engineers are no longer working on an under-display fingerprint sensor for the iPhone” after conducting many interviews with anonymous sources.

On the other hand, the notchless iPhone is said to be the focus of Apple’s attention at the moment. Face ID sensors are said to be hidden behind the display, and the front-facing camera will have a hole-punch design similar to those seen on previous phones.

This would not come as a tremendous shock if it were true. No-notch iPhones have been speculated in the past, and Face ID was always going to be a thing. There is no update for the iPhone 14, according to LeaksApplePro, since it has not yet met Apple’s high quality requirements.

We won’t see this new function until at least 2023, when the iPhone 15 will be released. These early leaks don’t present a very favourable image of the future iPhone, if they’re accurate.

However, even if they’re correct, there’s still a question of whether the under-display Face ID technology will be up to snuff by the end of 2017. Under-display cameras have so far proved to be of poor quality. In some ways, having Face ID sensors behind the screen differs from having a complete camera there since image quality isn’t as critical.

Unfortunately, this implies that the reintroduction of Touch ID to the iPhone may be less probable. That’s a bit odd, given that the great majority of high-end phones have long used in-screen fingerprint scanners without difficulty. It’s even more impressive when you realise that Apple already offers an iPad Air with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.
