Stay focused with a new distraction-filtering software

Interview: Ochi will assist you in coping with outside pressures.

Only a few weeks into the year 2022, we’re already seeing an abundance of new applications promising to address a wide range of issues. Do you, for example, send yourself text messages to remind you of appointments? A new chat-enabled note-taking software will make this practise a little easier. The developers of another software are hoping to keep you focused by reducing unnecessary noise from all of your iOS devices.

Ochi was launched on February 1 as a free download on the App Store by Michael Tigas. The Pro edition may be purchased for $3.99 / £3.49 / AU$4.99 each month, or $19.99 / £17.99 / AU$21.99 per year. Purchasing the Pro edition for the one-time purchase of $49.99 / £44.99 / AU$53.99 eliminates the need for a subscription.

In order to avoid being sidetracked while working on vital tasks, this new application enables users to build filters for various applications and websites. For example, you may prohibit yourself from using particular applications or URLs connected with certain social network accounts by blocking them in web browsers. Ochi allows you to mute just the programmes and websites that you need to concentrate on.

When using a smartphone, tablet, or computer, it’s simple to become sidetracked. Tigas sought to design something that goes beyond Apple’s Do Not Disturb and the Focus feature in iOS 15, which can hide applications and rearrange your home screen, respectively.

With Ochi I’m reminded of a programme called SelfControl that was accessible on my old MacBook Air 2013 laptop. When I was working on my undergraduate dissertation, SelfControl would shut off programmes and ban websites.

Tigas, on the other hand, is designed for the multi-device world of today. For example, if you set up a Facebook filter on your iPhone, the same restriction will be applied on your iPad and desktop iMac without your intervention.

Applications for iPhone and macOS look great thanks to Ochi’s basic but colourful design and handy widgets that let you set filters or see how much time is left till Ochi unlocks the apps and websites you’ve selected.

To make it easier to access any programmes or websites you’ve previously restricted, Ochi appears in the menu bar on macOS.

An interview with Ochi’s creator

After the debut of Ochi, I spoke with Tigas to find out why he decided to build the app.

‘Ochi was motivated by the concept of limiting distractions across all my devices,’ Tigas stated. Focused Work is an app I use on my Mac to block applications like Twitter when I’m working. But on occasion, I use my iPhone or iPad to test applications that I’m developing. With these, “doom-scrolling becomes a cinch.”

For years, Apple has made an effort to better understand how we spend our time on our smartphones, starting with the Focus feature in iOS 15 and continuing with the ScreenTime function in iOS 13. Inquiring as to how Ochi differed from other concentration applications, we spoke with Tigas.

When it comes to staying focused on a job, “Ochi” does more to keep individuals away from distractions than it does to get them to concentrate on the subject at hand.

If you take use of iOS’s automation features (and, to a lesser degree, macOS’ as well), “it’s a versatile tool,” Tigas noted. Timed filters may be applied to iOS applications, Mac apps, and websites as well as categories of websites including Social Media, Chat and the News. “

As a first in the distraction-blocking sector, Shortcuts can now be used to activate filters on your iPhone and iPad from a Mac.

Because Ochi is a distraction-targeting software, we wanted to know which scenarios Tigas found it most useful.

“Ochi has been quite beneficial when I’m playing online games with pals after work and before I go to bed,” Tigas stated. When I play games like Apex Legends or PUBG, I’ll occasionally take up my phone and detach from the group talk. When I’m having fun, Ochi reminds me to keep my feet on the ground.

We were curious whether there were any upcoming updates to the app, given that it was just recently released.

To make Ochi as adaptable as possible, “I’m genuinely enthusiastic about the next phase and I’ve maintained an open mind.” Tigas let out a scream. Using Shortcuts & Focus in the Mac’s Shortcuts software, Ochi can prevent iOS device distractions automatically. When it comes to filtering, I’d want to be able to apply them from my iPhone or iPad (or even my Apple Watch) without having to go into the Shortcuts for Mac programme.

Scheduled repeating filters are something Tigas has shown a strong preference for adding.

When it comes to banning applications like Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit at 1 a.m. every night, Tigas says, “this will be extremely beneficial.”

People would appreciate the option to block emails at certain periods throughout the workday, as well..”
