History of Outback Steakhouse

Outback Steakhouse is a Tampa, Florida-based American chain of casual dining establishments with an Australian flair that serve American cuisine. The network has more than 1,000 stores spread over 23 nations in Asia, Australia, North and South America. It was established in March 1988 by Bob Basham, Chris T. Sullivan, Trudy Cooper, and Tim Gannon, with its original site in Tampa. [2] Before Bloomin’ Brands bought it, OSI Restaurant Partners owned and operated it in the United States, while various franchise and venture agreements held it in other countries.

In 1996, the first Outback Steakhouse locations opened in Canada. Outback Steakhouse Canada abruptly closed all nine of its facilities in the province of Ontario in March 2009, claiming difficult economic times. However, in June 2009, Outback built a restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The only Outback Steakhouse restaurants open in Canada are these two, with a second one recently opening in Niagara Falls.

With a website at Outbackpom.com and restaurants in Birmingham, Basildon, Enfield, Romford, Stevenage, and Staines, Outback Steakhouse launched in the UK. Outback’s entry into the UK market came to an end on September 13 when just its Basildon and Romford locations remained.

In order to become privately held, OSI Restaurant Partners concluded a stock repurchase scheme on June 14, 2007. Outback Steakhouse’s current owner, Bloomin’ Brands, filed a registration statement with the SEC in April 2012 seeking approval to raise up to $300 million through an IPO.

The company Bloomin’ Brands, Inc. started trading on NASDAQ under the ticker “BLMN.”

The Bloomin’ Onion is a staple food at Outback. This mayonnaise-horseradish sauce-topped, breaded, deep-fried onion weighs one pound. It is chopped to “bloom” open. Similar dishes to the Bloomin’ Onion can be found at other eateries, including Chili’s Awesome Blossom (since discontinued) and Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon’s Texas Rose. Many of the Bloomin’ Onions have drawn criticism for having high calorie counts that occasionally exceed 1,500.
