YouTube has added two weeks to the trial period for the iPhone’s picture-in-picture capability.
According to YouTube, picture-in-picture mode for iOS is currently available to YouTube Premium users as a “experimental feature” until February 14. The functionality was supposed to remain accessible until January 31, but it has been pushed back many times. Also Hide iCloud Keychain Security Recommendations in iOS 15.4 Beta
Picture-in-picture mode, which is accessible on iPhones running iOS 14 and later, allows you to view films while using other apps. When watching a video, users may shift the movie to a smaller window that floats over the Home Screen or other applications by tapping the picture-in-picture icon with two boxes and an arrow.
A Google official told MacRumors in June 2021 that YouTube planned to deploy picture-in-picture for all iOS users in the United States, but no date was given for the rollout. We’ve reached out to Google for an update on the situation, and we’ll update this article if we learn anything new.
In the meanwhile, picture-in-picture for iOS is still available only to YouTube Premium users. YouTube Premium, which costs $11.99 a month in the United States, includes ad-free videos, the option to download videos, video playback when a device’s screen is locked, and other benefits.
Update: In a statement provided with MacRumors today, Google stated that it is “still intending to offer PiP for all users in the US who do not have a YouTube Premium membership,” but that it has no other information to give at this time.
We’re still planning to launch PiP for all users without a YouTube Premium subscription in the US. We have no other updates to share at this time. In the meantime, we’ve also extended our experiment of PiP on youtube.com/new for our Premium users on iOS as we continue to test and improve the experience before launch.
