Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro launch: Leica cameras, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset

There are two main cameras on the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro, both with 1/1.28″ sensors, but the 12S Ultra was also introduced today and has an even larger sensor. However, all three S-series models were “co-engineered with Leica” and include the identical IMX707 sensor.

What exactly does that mean? In addition to the Leica Summicron lenses and support for Leica image profiles, all three phones feature the ability to take photos. The Leica Authentic Look and Leica Vibrant Look presets are available to users. For example, the first mimics the aesthetic of a Leica camera while the second is a combination of both Leica and Xiaomi’s styles.

As an additional feature, Adobe Labs tuned the phones to support 10-bit RAW capture. In order for photographers to get a decent starting point for post-processing, the phone will include color correcting metadata in the photographs.

If we go back to the IMX707 sensor, we see that it has a 50MP (1/1.28″) resolution and 1.22m native pixel size (which becomes 2.44m after binning). Burst modes at 30 frames per second, AI Image Solution and ProFocus from Xiaomi, as well as quick start-up, capture and continuous capture are all supported.

Two additional 50MP cameras are available on the Pro model, one with a 50mm lens and the other with an extremely wide 14mm lens (115° field of view). Rather than a 13MP ultra wide, the 12S has a 5MP telemacro.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset is also used in the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro, which improves performance by 10% while consuming 30% less power. The S-phones’ batteries will last longer and they will operate more smoothly even when they are under heavy use.

Other than improvements to the cameras and the chipset, the two phones are identical to the 12 and 12 Pro. You may also get the Xiaomi 12S Pro and 12S Ultra with a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED display (E5, 1-120Hz, FHD+). Refresh rate of 120Hz is 120Hz on the vanilla 12S’s 6.28-inch panel with 120Hz refresh rate.

The in-house Xiaomi Surge P1 chipset and a 4,600mAh battery power the 12S Pro’s rapid charging capabilities (120W wired and 50W wireless). The Pro can go from 0% to 100% in 19 minutes with a 120W power brick, or 25 minutes in low temperature mode with the same power brick. The Xiaomi 12S’s 4,500mAh battery may be recharged wirelessly or with a wired output of 67W.
