The capital city of Washington (CNN) After the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri was charged by a professor of transphobia during a hearing on the legal consequences.
Progressives have begun referring to those seeking abortion rights as “pregnant people” rather than “women” since the Supreme Court’s decision last month, recognizing that the 1973 landmark ruling that made the right to an abortion a federal constitutional right has been overturned and that transgender men and non-binary people are also affected by the ruling.
“You allude to ‘pregnant people’ in your statement. If so, would it be females?” During the heated exchange at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Hawley questioned Khiara Bridges, a law professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law.
A large number of female transgender people have the ability to become pregnant; nevertheless, a large number of female transgender people do not. Non-binary people and trans guys are both capable of becoming pregnant, according to this statement.
The professor said that Hawley’s asking was transphobic because he was effectively denying the reality of trans males and non-binary individuals when he inquired about Bridges’ opinion of “the essence of this right, then.”
Bridges told the senator, “I want to realize that your line of questioning is transphobic and it opens up trans individuals to harm by not acknowledging them,” to which the senator answered incredulously.
When it comes to abortion and transgender rights, Republican state legislators have passed a torrent of restrictive bills in recent months and years, which is why Hawley is focusing his attention on inclusive wording.
According to Bridges, “Denying that trans people exist and pretending not to know they exist is harmful,” and that trans persons have a high prevalence of attempted suicide.
