Microsoft’s open source framework is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. NET
Microsoft is commemorating the 20th anniversary of its open source framework,.NET, which is used by a wide range of developers.
Today is the 20th anniversary of the introduction of Visual Studio.NET and the initial edition of the.NET platform, according to a blog post by Microsoft’s Beth Massi.
More than five million developers across the world are using.NET, and it has been named the most popular framework on Stack Overflow for 2019, 2020, and 2021.
An ally in the open-source community
Because of the success of the.NET Framework, Microsoft has added support for macOS and Linux development to the.NET family, which was initially intended primarily for Windows users. In 2014, the project was released as open source on Github thanks to the company’s pioneering role in open sourcing.

When Microsoft purchased Github, many were concerned that the corporation wasn’t operating on an equal playing field when it came to open source software.
When it comes to the open source community, Microsoft has established itself to be a welcome contributor, and.NET is an excellent illustration of why: cross-platform tools that developers love to work with
However, “.NET’s original vision to change developers’ lives still holds true,” Massi says.
“It’s possible to create any type of app, for any operating system, with excellent performance. Microcontrollers down to high-performance, cloud-scale services. To say that the community has made this platform successful would be an understatement: it’s here.”
