Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in the works.

It may not come as a surprise that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in the works, but, well, Grand Theft Auto 6 is in the works. Rockstar Games verified the news on its official Newswire today (Feb. 4) with a small comment at the end of a much lengthier Grand Theft Auto Online update:

“We are thrilled to report that active development on the next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” the company said in a statement. “We look forward to providing more information as soon as it is available, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

It’s been almost a decade, and there’s no evidence of a Grand Theft Auto VI release date in the near future. However, Kotaku’s news verified that the studio is now in the early stages of production for the next incarnation of the iconic game.

Despite the fact that the game is still years away from release, leaks and speculations have revealed fascinating details about it. Thus, what do we know so far about Grand Theft Auto VI?

It’s brief and to-the-point, so much so that Rockstar reaffirmed essentially the same message on Twitter:

At this point, we have more questions than answers concerning Grand Theft Auto 6. We don’t know when it will be released; we don’t know what platforms it will be for; we don’t know where it will take place; and we don’t know whether any plot lines from prior games will be continued. We don’t even know if Rockstar will title it “Grand Theft Auto VI,” because game sequels with real numbers don’t appear to be in favour these days.

Fans are asking how Grand Theft Auto VI can beat the amazing return to Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V.

According to several speculations, the developers may be resurrecting the infamous Vice City in a contemporary context. In addition, according to Kotaku’s article on Rockstar Games’ workplace adjustments, the devs may not be constructing a large map.

Instead, in order to prevent crunch, the devs will release the game with a reasonably huge map in terms of Rockstar’s standards, and they will continue to extend it with additional locales and POIs via DLCs.

Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, so nine years feels like a long time to go between complete instalments. It’s worth mentioning, though, that GTA V’s multiplayer version, Grand Theft Auto Online, has been operating continuously since 2013, and has probably outstripped the single-player game in terms of success and impact. It will be intriguing to see whether Grand Theft Auto 6 introduces a new online feature or simply sticks to a single-player adventure.

Even without Grand Theft Auto Online, the franchise hasn’t remained completely inactive since GTA V. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition was released for PC and consoles in 2021. To put it mildly, it was a shambles, with broken visual effects and an exceptionally bad Switch port. Rockstar has addressed some of the game’s issues in recent months, but it’s probably for the best that the developer is taking its time with GTA 6.

Otherwise, we’ll find out more when Rockstar decides to reveal it. Now that Rockstar has publicly recognised the game, we can only assume that a teaser trailer won’t be long following, maybe at one of this year’s major gaming conventions. However, we don’t expect to see the game this year Because Rockstar has a habit of moving at its own time.

According to an analyst from investment banking firm Jefferies, Take-Two has such high aspirations because they are confident in at least one of their next projects, which is highly likely to be a Rockstar IP, and as of now, that project appears to be Grand Theft Auto VI.
