According to reports from iOS 15 users, a recurring iOS bug that causes Apple’s Messages app to send read receipts even when the setting is disabled is back on the rise.
When read receipts are enabled in iOS (Settings -> Messages -> Send Read Receipts), the “Delivered” text that a person sees under an iMessage they sent you changes to “Read” after you’ve viewed it in the conversation thread, even if you haven’t responded. The setting is synced across all Apple devices that are signed in with the same Apple ID.
There have been sporadic reports that Messages does not always respect the user setting over the last few years, but according to Macworld’s Glenn Fleishman, the bug appears to be rearing its head again, this time for a larger number of users running the latest version of iOS 15.
Some users have discovered that restarting their device solves the problem, at least temporarily, but no permanent solution has been discovered, implying that Apple should change the way the function works in a future update to its mobile operating system. If we learn anything new, we’ll update this article.
According to Macworld, some iOS and iPadOS users are reporting that even when the feature is turned off, their contacts can see when their messages are read. On all of Apple’s platforms, you can turn the feature on or off via a system-wide setting. Here are the simple steps you can take to check the settings on whatever Apple device you’re using:
- iOS: Go to Settings > Messages and toggle the Send Read Receipts toggle.
- iPadOS: Go to Settings > Messages and toggle the Send Read Receipts toggle.
- macOS: Navigate to Settings > Preferences > iMessage and check the box next to “Send read receipts.”
