Volkswagen is gearing up for the arrival of the VW ID Buzz, a reimagined version of its famous van for the electric vehicle era.

ID Buzz will be available in the United States by 2023, and VW believes it will be completely autonomous by 2025, which is quite a feat for an electric car. The inside will be spacious, the cockpit will be high-tech, and there will be space for up to seven individuals to sit.

This first glance suggests that the original VW van was taken by aliens, transformed into a pulp sci-fi masterpiece, and then returned to Earth approximately 60 years after it was first taken. Even though the vehicle hasn’t been released yet and there aren’t many information, here’s what we do know.

Release window and models for the VW ID Buzz

Volkswagen has announced that the ID Buzz will be on sale in Europe in 2022, but hasn’t given a specific date. In 2023, the North American version will be available for purchase in the United States.

However, we don’t have any information on the van’s cost, but we do know that there will be a variety of models available for purchase. The ID Buzz Cargo seems to be a commercial version for services like goods delivery in both Europe and the United States, according to reports.

Six-seat models with all passengers facing forward and information displays in the front seats will also be available for Europe. Two of the back seats in the U.S. model will face away from the rear of the van, which changes the configuration.

One has rear-wheel drive and 200 hp, while the other has all-wheel drive and the same amount of hp.

The VW ID Buzz concept

There are several design decisions that hint that VW is trying too hard to make the ID Buzz seem futuristic in the passenger version of the vehicle. You still get a two-tone colour design with slide-open doors and a lot of internal room for your beach or forest outings or anything else you may be doing.

Two glass roof panels cover both the driver and passenger, while a third panel covers the back seats. LED headlights and a huge VW emblem remind you that it’s a Volkswagen, in case you forgot.

The design of the Cargo model has been revised in response to prototypes that have been discovered in action. Think of the ID Buzz as a little Ford Transit van mated to a large ID Buzz, and you’ll get the concept.

However, it is worth noting that the ID Buzz is currently just a concept car. This implies that before you can purchase one, the design may have changed significantly.

It has previously been observed in Germany testing prototypes of the cargo vehicle. This variant, unlike the idea version’s sleeker and shinier design, is not substantially different in terms of overall appearance. Since this car is likely to go through multiple changes before going on sale, the final product may not be as remarkable as the initial concept.

VW ID Buzz interior and exterior design and specification

The inside of the VW ID Buzz is, as one would expect, rather roomy. Based on what we’ve observed thus far, we agree with VW’s usage of the term. The ID Buzz’s passenger versions will accommodate four people, however the configuration of the back seats may vary depending on where you purchase the van.

There will be four rear seats in European vehicles, all facing forward, while there will be just two in American models, both facing the back of the van.

VW promises that the van will have plenty of room for passengers and cargo. A “flexible seating” and “extra large baggage compartment” are promised by the company, although no details have been released.

Also included in the inside are an infotainment touchscreen display and an adjustable steering wheel that seems to have drawn inspiration from Tesla’s divisive “Yoke” steering wheel design. In addition to being smaller and more rectangular, it lacks the standard levers and buttons seen on other automobiles, favouring touch controls instead.

According to Motor1 photographs of the delivery van prototype, that may alter before the ID Buzz finds its way into vehicle showrooms. Honestly, it’s something we could do without. Since prototypes aren’t usually accurate representations of the final product, it’s possible that this may not be the case.

Furthermore, VW has promised an augmented reality heads-up display that projects route instructions right in front of the driver’s eyes while driving. This means that instead of constantly checking your phone or your car’s entertainment system, you should be able only to look at the road ahead.

Vehicle identification number (VIN) autonomy

Only a few of companies are working on self-driving cars, and they’re not on public roads. The Society of Automotive Engineers has defined six degrees of car autonomy, ranging from level 0 (no autonomy at all) to level 5. (zero driver input at any time). Currently, the vast majority of automobiles are either Level 1 or 2 autonomous, with a very tiny number of Level 3 vehicles on the road.

Level 4 automation, according to VW’s plans, should be available in the ID Buzz by 2025. There are four levels of autonomous driving: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. In other cases, a human driver may still have to intervene and manually override the autonomous features.

The ID Buzz’s several variations, in principle, should be able to transport people and products in only four years.. That’s a major thing, particularly considering how often manufacturers have promised big advancements in autonomy but never delivered on them.

What is unclear is whether VW will be able to meet its promises. The Audi A8L, a Level 3 self-driving vehicle intended for delivery in Europe by VW-owned Audi in 2019, never materialised. Because of the absence of a regulatory framework, it seems that the technology was sold to the general public in an illegal grey area.

Assuming, however, that this truly succeeded, VW is well on its way to level 4 automation. However, we’ve been burnt before, so we’ll have to wait and see what transpires this time around.

the future of VW ID Buzz

Clearly, VW’s goal with the ID Buzz is to make it more than simply an electric replica of the iconic van it has created. This is a pretty ambitious initiative that will have to be seen whether the German manufacturer can accomplish all of its goals by 2025.

It’ll be intriguing to see what the ID Buzz has to offer even if it doesn’t have features like Level 4 autonomy or a trapezoidal steering wheel. Due to the vehicle’s conceptual and prototype status, we are unable to assess critical performance metrics such as range. So we’ll have to wait and see.
