TikTok announced it banned deadnaming and misgendering in a new update Tuesday
As part of an update to its community standards, TikTok has outlawed deadnaming, misgendering, and anything that encourages conversion therapy.
“These ideologies have long been prohibited,” TikTok stated on its website, but this is the first time they have been explicitly referenced in its rules.
Transgender or nonbinary people are “deadnamed,” which means they are addressed by a name other than their chosen name, which the Cleveland Clinic says is “more accepting” for them.
According to PsychCentral, “inducing emotions of anxiety and gender dysphoria” may be caused by the practise of deadnaming.
When someone uses language that does not reflect their own gender identity, it is called “misgendering.” An individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity may be changed via conversion therapy, as Insider has reported. Several states in the United States have outlawed the use of it because of its negative effects on health.
“These improvements are a good thing” since “hate speech or damaging material is not properly characterised,” says Dr. Casey Fiesler, a researcher who teaches information science at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Deadnaming and conversion therapy conversations, she said to Insider, help make it “unambiguous” that such behaviour constitutes hateful conduct.
The fact that TikTok acknowledges new behaviours to discourage, despite the fact that she does not have a great lot of faith in TikTok’s moderation mechanism, is a good thing.
Community rules may serve as a guidepost for social norms and the ideals of a platform, even if there are some difficulties in finding out how to govern it, particularly at beginning,” she added.
Additionally, a post in the community outlined other changes, such as TikTok challenging policies and preventing material that encourages disordered eating. According to TikTok, the new policy intends to “acknowledge more symptoms, such as overexercise or short-term fasting, that are frequently under-recognized signs” of a potential eating disorder.
