Beam us up, because the release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been announced! The prequel to the original series goes where no franchise entry has gone before – to the Enterprise deck before Captain Kirk ever set foot on it.
Fans first saw the actors on Star Trek Day, September 8, when Paramount Plus released an introductory video. Captain Pike (Anson Mount), his Number One, Una Chin-Riley nicknamed Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Science Officer Spock have previously featured on Star Trek Discovery (Ethan Peck). However, the prequel will feature younger versions of recognisable characters as well as some whole new ones. Here’s all we know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds thus far.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date
The release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been announced for May 5 by Paramount Plus.
That’s pretty much what we expected, given that Star Trek: Discovery season 4 part 2 debuts on February 10 and Star Trek: Picard season 2 debuts on March 3. Its ten-episode run will expire just in time for Strange New Worlds to begin.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast
All of the primary cast members introduce themselves and their roles in the teaser video. It begins with Mount marvelling at his role as Enterprise Captain Pike (the forerunner to Captain Kirk), then moves on to Peck as Spock (with a more spiky version of his trademark bowl cut) and Romijn as Number One.
The latter mentions that Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the series creator’s wife, played the part in the original pilot. However, Number One was dropped from the performance, and Barrett went on to portray Nurse Chapel.
Celia Rose Gooding has been cast as Cadet Nyota Uhura, who was formerly portrayed by Nichelle Nichols on the original Star Trek series. “I am pleased to be a part of this heritage,” Gooding adds.
Babs Olusanmokun reprises his role as Dr. M’Benga, a physician who appeared in the original series.
And Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel, a job that Barrett subsequently assumed.
The film introduces three new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds characters: Bruce Horak as Hemmer, a member of the albino Andorian subspecies the Aenar; Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh; and Melissa Navia as Lieutenant Erica Ortegas.
