If reports about Apple’s phone intentions are true, the iPhone 14 Max might join the iPhone 14 lineup in the fall. But an entirely new moniker could be used to introduce the 6.7-inch phone.

The larger of the two entry-level iPhone 14 devices will reportedly be dubbed the iPhone 14 Plus rather than the iPhone 14 Max, as had been earlier rumored by leaker Lanzuk(opens in new tab).

This rumor claims that the names of the remaining iPhone models won’t change. This applies to both iPhone 14 Pro variants as well as the 6.1-inch phone that will be designated as the iPhone 14 in its entirety. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would be the names of the 6.1- and 6.7-inch devices, respectively.

The iPhone 8 Plus was the last time Apple used the word “Plus” to denote one of their iPhone models, which was five years ago. Even the iPhone Pro series was nonexistent back then; the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max introduced it.

Apple iPhone 14 Plus: A dissenting view

To distinguish between the two 6.7-inch iPhones that are anticipated to be part of Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup, is the most obvious reason why the company would change its naming practices. Given that the titles of the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max sound extremely similar, Apple probably chose the more costly Pro model to distinguish it from the less expensive Max variant.

The 6.7-inch model’s cheaper price and use of the Plus brand help to distinguish it. The iPhone 14 Max/Plus is anticipated to replace the iPhone 14 small, so because it’s a new addition to the iPhone lineup, perhaps Apple will like to give the new product a distinctive moniker.

Apple iPhone 14 Plus: What do we know about Apple’s next iPhones

Although Lanzuk has a history of being a reliable leaker and mentions a vendor source in their blog post, not everyone concurs that the name change will happen soon. According to Twitter user ShrimpApplePro(opens in new tab), who has been making this claim since August 2021, the Plus name will not be returning with the iPhone 14. They claim that Apple will utilize the same names for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models as they did for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.

It’s also true that the name of the new 6.7-inch device, the iPhone 14 Plus, was originally mentioned in a tweet by Lanzuk. The iPhone 14 Max has been the subject of previous speculations, although the designation may be be an attempt to set it apart from the tiny model it would eventually replace in Apple’s lineup.

Since Apple doesn’t comment on upcoming devices, everything we currently know about the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lineups comes from rumors. For iPhone enthusiasts, the iPhone 14 Pro in particular, there do appear to be some interesting features in the works.

At this time, all indications point to a greater gap between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, which would prevent the less expensive model from getting features like the new A16 Bionic chip or an upgraded 48MP camera. The iPhone notch will probably be replaced with camera cutouts on the Pro versions, but it will probably still be present on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
