Whether you have the original AirPods, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, or AirPods Pro, all of these models can occasionally experience a problem in which one AirPod refuses to charge in the Charging Case.
It’s a common problem that’s not only inconvenient, but it may effectively put a stop to your day’s plans. Fortunately, most problems may be resolved at home without contacting Apple or returning the AirPods. Before you do anything else, try the following suggestions. also learn How to Make a FaceTime Call on Apple Watch Easily
1. Check Charging Case Battery Level
When one AirPod stops charging, the Charging Case is frequently at blame. In general, if the charge is less than 10%, the case does not have enough juice to charge both AirPods.
To check the battery level of your Charging Case, place the AirPods inside and close the cover. Bring the case closer to your iPhone and then lift the cover. An AirPods card should appear on the iPhone’s screen, displaying the battery level of the Charging Case and both AirPods.
You can also check the charge status of your AirPods using the Batteries widget on your iPhone’s Today View, which you can access by swiping right on the Lock screen or the first screen of apps on your Home screen.
If the Charging Case’s battery level is sufficient but one AirPod is still not charging (i.e. there is no “lightning bolt” charging icon next to it), go to the next step in this article.
If a low battery in the Charging Case was the source of your issue, you now know how to charge it with a Lightning cable. Because the Charging Case’s battery lasts so long on a single charge, it’s easy to forget to connect it to a power outlet.
so make a habit of charging it every day or every other day, even if it’s only for 15 minutes. That way, you’ll never be without power for your AirPods while on the go.
2. Reinsert the AirPod
If the AirPod won’t charge despite having a full charge in the Charging Case, the earpiece may be sitting incorrectly in the case and not making adequate contact with the charging port. Remove any accessories, such as foam eartips, before reinserting the AirPod and checking to see if the charging icon displays next to it when you bring the AirPods close to your iPhone.
If the AirPod still isn’t charging, the contacts may be unclean, and the AirPod stem and/or Charging Case may need to be cleaned. To find out how, read the cleaning tips below.
3. Clean the AirPod and Charging Case
The charging contacts on the AirPod stem, inside the Charging Case, or both are probably the most common reason an AirPod stops charging. This inhibits enough electrical charge from getting through, but you can clear things up using the method described below.
What You’ll Need
- Lint-free or mirofiber cloth
- Periodontal brush, straw cleaner, or Q-tip
- 70% isopropyl alcohol (optional)
Using the dry, lint-free fabric, clean the stem of the AirPod, focusing around the silver contacts on the end.
Then, using a periodontal brush or other similar tool, clean the internal contact points in each AirPod bay within the Charging Case. If you come across any persistent muck, moisten a Q-tip with water or spritz it with isopropyl alcohol (DO NOT spray alcohol or water directly on the case) and work it over the unclean area.
If you use your AirPods on a daily basis, you should clean them once a week to recover and maintain proper contact between the AirPods and the Charging Case.
Reset AirPods
Apple’s original AirPods, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro all have a reset button that restores them to factory settings. This can be useful if you’re having issues with them, such as when one of them refuses to charge.
- Place your AirPods in their case and snap the lid shut.
- Wait 30 seconds before opening the lid.
- Go to Settings -> Bluetooth on your iOS device and hit the circled I icon next to your AirPods.
- Tap Forget This Device again to confirm.
- Press and hold the button on the back of the AirPods case for around 15 seconds, or until the status light flashes amber. If you solely charge your AirPods case via a cable connection, the status light is located within the case between the AirPods. The status light is on the front of the case if you have AirPods Pro or if your AirPods case charges wirelessly.
- Place your AirPods close to your device while the case lid is open, and then follow the steps on your device’s screen to reconnect your AirPods.
And that’s the end of it. Please keep in mind that now that the AirPods have been reset, they will no longer recognise any of the devices associated with your iCloud account. When you open the AirPods case near an iOS device, the setup procedure will begin, just like the first time you used them.
Contact Apple Support
If none of the following fixes the problem of one AirPod not charging, it’s time to contact Apple Support, as Apple’s team will be able to identify whether your AirPod or Charging Case needs to be repaired or replaced.
