There will be a mandatory return to the workplace for Google workers beginning on Monday, April 4, according to CNBC. Employees in the Bay Area, where Google maintains a primary site in Mountain View, as well as those around the country will be affected.
Restrictions on Covid use have been eased in Santa Clara County, where Google and Apple are based, and the indoor mask rule in the region was lifted today, allowing Google to urge staff to return.

Ideally, employees will spend three days a week in the office and two days a week working from home. With the addition of a one-month yearly allowance for working remotely, Apple intends on allowing workers to spend more time with their families.
There has been some pushback from Apple employees who do not want to do their jobs in person, especially after the company has successfully launched products, services, and software updates with most people working remotely for the last two years, as technology company employees have become accustomed to working from home and. While Apple is known for its emphasis on face-to-face communication, employees have written to the company to request that they be allowed to work from home on a long-term basis.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, warned in June that video conferencing can’t replace certain aspects of face-to-face communication. For all that we have accomplished, “the fact is that there has been something fundamental lacking from this last year: each other,” he said in a memo.
Google, like Apple, aims to use a mixed schedule to help workers transition back to work after maternity leave. Most employees will be required to work in the office three days a week, with the option of working from home two days a week for the privileged few. A small percentage of Google’s workforce is permitted to work from home on a permanent basis as well.
