The Wall Street Journal claimed on Sunday that Musk, 51, had a “brief affair” with Nicole Shanahan last fall, and cited persons familiar with the case in reporting his response to the report on Twitter.

Reportedly, they were longstanding friends, with Brin even donating $500,000 to Tesla during the financial crisis of 2008. Brin’s home in Silicon Valley is where Musk has “frequently crashed” over the years, the Wall Street Journal reported.

There has been a rise in animosity between Brin and Musk since their purported “liaison,” according to the publication’s sources, with Brin suggesting that his financial advisers sell their personal investments in Musk’s companies.

They did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment, nor did they comment to the Wall Street Journal.
