As a result, Apple Pay will no longer be able to use Russian-sanctioned bank accounts.

According to a tweet from the Twitter account SupportDiffs, Apple has withdrawn the bank Novikombank from its list of Apple Pay-supported banks after it was listed in penalties.

“Apple Pay Participating Banks in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East” has been updated by Apple.

If you go to the Apple Support page for Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, Novikombank is no longer listed as an Apple Pay-enabled bank.

Last week, when the United States issued sanctions on Russia, Apple Pay and other digital payment platforms like Google Pay had ceased operating in Russia for clients of Russian banks impacted.

There will be no international transactions or online payments for those clients of those banks, according to the Central Bank.

As of this writing, it looks that Apple is also shutting certain banks off from Apple Pay outside of the nation as well. Sanctions have been placed on the following financial institutions because of their involvement in the following activities:

  • VTB Group
  • Sovcombank
  • Novikombank
  • Promsvyazbank
  • Otkritie

In the absence of Apple Pay, users of those banks should be able to make contactless payments using their physical cards provided their cards enable NFC. In other words, as more nations impose sanctions on Russia and its banks, the less locations clients may use their debit and credit cards issued by banks in those countries will become.

As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, sanctions on Russia and its leaders have continued to rise. Source
