Wordle #249 is here. And the answer is…
Interested in Wordle? You’re not the only one. It’s a simple but addicting word game that millions of people play every day and then post their findings on social media.
There are some people who can’t play every day. A 10-minute game could not be enough time for you, or you might be offline for 24 hours or longer. It’s possible you just overlooked it.
The Wordle Archive is the only method to play past puzzles in the order they originally appeared if you’ve missed a day.
What if you’ve missed a game and only want to check today’s Wordle answer? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Wordle aficionados like us at Tom’s Guide will make sure to keep this post up to date with the latest results.
However, if you don’t want to be spoiled for game #249, don’t read any further. Also, don’t sneak a look ahead of time to give yourself an unfair advantage over your buddies; that’s just plain unethical.
Have you been stumped by today’s question? Not only are you not alone, but you’re not the only one. Why Wordle is on the verge of losing me is explained in the next paragraph.
Today’s Wordle answer #249, Wednesday, February 23
As for Wordle’s solution to game #249, here it is:
Let us hear it for the drummer… TROVE is the name of the game.
THORN and OTHER were the first two obvious choices, but this one is a little more difficult. Even if it isn’t a strange term, you may not think of it right away.
Word and Phrase Info lists it as the 17,227th most frequent word, much behind THORN and OTHER in terms of frequency. For those of you who are still reeling from CAULK and TACIT, I’d be willing to bet that this one is a lot more well-known. As a result of the antics of those two, Katie Mortram, a writer for Tom’s Guide, has declared that Wordle is in danger of losing her support.
Anyway, let’s go back to the topic at hand: TROVE. If you’re a lover of fairy tales, Lord of the Rings, or pirates, you’ll recognise this word.
Here’s what Merriam-Webster has to say about it:
- DISCOVERY, FIND
- a valuable collection: TREASURE
My only other observation on today’s Wordle answer is that there’s something of a theme developing in terms of the letters used because for the third day in a row the word includes T, R and O. So if you’re using one of the best Wordle start words that includes those three letters, you should have had plenty of success recently.
All the same, if anyone at the NYT is reading this then maybe mix it up a little tomorrow and give us a word with some different letters, eh?

What else should I know about Wordle?
Since its October 2021 introduction, Wordle has been gaining traction, but it wasn’t until the end of 2021 that it really took off. A seven-figure fee was paid by the New York Times to acquire Wordle in February, and the game is now part of NYT Games.
The game may be found here on the NYT Games website and is completely free to play. There has been no change in pricing, according to the New York Times and the game’s inventor, Josh Wardle. Wordle hasn’t become any more difficult since the New York Times purchased it, according to some users.
You get six chances to guess a five-letter word in Wordle’s basic game. The correctness of each of your guesses is shown by the placement of the corresponding letters in the goal word.
It becomes green if a letter is positioned correctly. Yellow indicates that it is in the word, but in the incorrect location. It becomes grey if it isn’t in the term at all.
Every day, the same problem is sent out, and everyone must solve it. We’ve compiled a list of some of the greatest Wordle alternatives to help pass the time until it resets at 7 p.m. ET each day.
