The best new comedy is on Hulu — and it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Abbott Elementary may be seen on Hulu even if you don’t have access to ABC.

My humorous bone has been aching for a new comedy for a time now. My favourite comedy isn’t returning for another season (such as the excellent third season of What We Do in The Shadows). In contrast, there’s a whole new programme that brings me to places and circumstances I’d never otherwise witness. It’s been available on Hulu for a few months, as it turns out.

A new sitcom I’d never heard of, Abbott Elementary, began gaining traction. At a time when many of us (including me) were too busy to search for new things, Abbott Elementary came into being on Dec. 7, 2021.

In addition, there’s the issue of where to get Abbott Elementary to watch. As Sling TV doesn’t carry ABC or CBS broadcast channels, I didn’t see any of the excitement around the series.

In contrast, after starting Abbott Elementary, I’ll be clamouring to tell everyone about how wonderful it is (and how it reminds me that Hulu is one of the best streaming services).

Abbott Elementary serves as a timely reminder of why Hulu is the best streaming service out there.

You can’t underestimate the power of the office sitcom. Even though shows such as American Auto, Superstore, and A.P. Bio have all been shown, they’re generally overlooked. Whether this is due to the social media buzz around Abbott Elementary seldom forming around network TV series (although Ted Lasso has all the love in the world over on Apple TV Plus of all places) is beyond me, but that’s the feeling I get.

That’s why I’m a fan of Hulu, which receives new episodes of current-airing series the day they air. Re-airing of TV episodes is a terrific feature of Hulu that many people overlook, and it’s one of the main reasons why cord-cutters love it. Hulu’s content isn’t confined to its own original series and movies.

Abbott Elementary is hilariously referred to as an ABC Original to ensure that no one mistakenly believes that it is a Hulu programme. For those of us who haven’t yet signed up for a Hulu subscription, here’s all you need to know:

One of the best current sitcoms, Abbott Elementary is a must-see for every fan

Public education in the United States is hopelessly flawed and dysfunctional, in case you somehow missed it. A.P. Bio, for example, uses the high school as a setting for its humour.

Abbott Elementary, on the other hand, is geared at a younger demographic, with a particular emphasis on the underpaid Philadelphia teachers at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. It’s rare to see a TV show about an underfunded school (except for the fourth season of The Wire), but there appears to be only one other elementary school-focused live action TV show in recent history: Teachers, which aired for three seasons on Prime Video. This makes Abbott Elementary feel even more fresh.

Abbot would never run out of catastrophe in this environment, as seen by an early episode in which a broken overhead lamp causes a power outage. That teachers in Abbott’s school district need more money to help their children is the main theme of the series. One hilarious result of this is that instructors on TikTok are trying to earn money for their classrooms.

Putting teachers first at Abbott Elementary has been a terrific success for the school.

Children do appear in Abbott Elementary as pupils, but the emphasis is on the eccentric adults who attempt to instruct these children.

Casting can be a minefield, but Abbott Elementary’s main actor understands the material well, which helped the show’s success. The show’s timid and uncomfortable instructor Janine Teagues is portrayed by Quinta Brunson, who is the show’s creator, writer, and producer as well as one of its stars. When you consider that this is Janine’s show, it’s easy to see why she’s so central to it. She’s the best person to convey its words.

However, Janine as a character suffers greatly when she is not surrounded by the grizzled young veterans who serve as her students. Barbara Howard (played by Sheryl Lee Ralph), a kindergarten teacher, has quickly been my favourite character in the series thus far.

Hey there, ABC: In the event that you’re listening, when will Abbott Elementary’s second season premiere?

Even the audience may find Janine a little much, which makes Barbara a great foil for our hero’s attempts to win her over (see Ted Lasso’s Roy Kent, for example). When Janine first tries to meet up with Barbara after work, she is advised that her emails go to her colleague’s spam box because of the way they are formatted. Janine is unable to accept a clue, and even asks aloud how it doesn’t happen with any other employees.

In Abbott Elementary, Janelle James does an excellent job as principle Ava Coleman, who is completely unfit for the position. Ava is a master at making things difficult and creating TikToks, two abilities you wouldn’t expect to find in a school principle. With the assistance of Lisa Ann Walter’s loud Melissa Schemmenti and Chris Perfetti’s mild-mannered Jacob Hill, the professors have a variety of tones they may choose from.

Starting Abbott Elementary School now is the best moment

Abbott Elementary is taking a three-week hiatus after its ninth episode, which aired on Tuesday, according to Brunson’s tweet (Feb. 22). Brunson points out that the first season is 12 episodes long, so it will return for four more.

That implies that each of us has three weeks to watch nine episodes of the series. Moreover, this programme is a cinch to binge-watch, I can tell you. One day off from work could be enough for you to complete viewing it.

Soon, the “will they or wont they?” interaction between characters on the programme will begin to intrigue you (no spoilers here). You could also learn that Tariq, Janine’s on-screen lover, is really the funny rapper Zack Fox in real life, not just a TV rapper.

Please let us know if you share our enthusiasm about Abbott Elementary School. Class has been dismissed for the time being. If you’re reading this, ABC, I’m hoping you’re paying attention. When are you going to give Abbott Elementary a second season?
