It’s almost over. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be the show’s mainstream series finale. As for the rest of the Eleven crew, we’re not quite ready yet either.

Stranger Things season 5 may not arrive on Netflix for some time, despite our unwillingness to say goodbye to our Hawkins-based heroes. The co-creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, are unsure when the fifth season will begin production. While we’d want to see Stranger Things 5 as soon as possible, we’re pleased for the Duffers to take their time making it the best it can be. As a result, we’ll be able to postpone the inevitable end of our relationship for as long as possible.

Stranger Things season 5 release date: what we know

Stranger Things season 4 finds the gang in a barn, where they are all staring at a figure in the distance.

When will Netflix release the fifth season of Stranger Things? Netflix provided this image.)
Season 5 of Stranger Things has not yet been announced.

According to David Harbour, the actor who portrays Jim Hopper in the TV program, production will begin “next year” after the Duffer brothers finish writing the screenplays. Stranger Things 5 might arrive as early as 2024 if no problems arise during development.

A interview with Collider(opens in a new tab) reveals that Netflix has no plans to telecast the fifth season of The Walking Dead. “It all depends on who you ask,” Matt Duffer stated. “We haven’t quite figured it out yet. We’d want extra production time if you ask our AD [assistant director] and our line producer. We need extra time for post-production, according to our post-production supervisor. It’s going to be a lengthy debate. What’s the time limit for everyone?

When it comes to shortening production and post-production, the more things are sacrificed. This is a fact.” Ross and I, I believe, will always prioritize quality. At the end of the day, I believe that quality is more important than speed.

The actor who portrays Max Mayfield, Sadie Sink, has also hinted that the return of Stranger Things to our screens may take some time. “It takes a long to get everything set to go for a new season, because once we start shooting, we don’t stop,” she told Deadline. Season five might take as long as two years, so we’ll just have to wait and see. A fifth season of The Walking Dead is a certainty, but I don’t believe the Duffers are going to hurry it. They’re trying to put together the finest possible last season.

Season 5’s episodes will be shorter than those of the fourth season, according to the Duffers. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see whether that’s the case. For Stranger Things 5, the length of episodes will be determined by screenplay length, based on how the Duffers plan to finish up the core show’s plot. In a nutshell, we’ll have to wait and see what the pre-production team comes up with.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 5 CAST

Stranger Things season 5 cast: who’s returning?

There’s been no official confirmation on the cast front yet. But, based on how season 4 ended, here’s a list of the characters we expect to see return:

  • Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
  • Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
  • David Harbour as Jim Hopper
  • Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
  • Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
  • Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
  • Noah Schnapp as Will Byers
  • Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield
  • Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
  • Natalie Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
  • Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers
  • Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley
  • Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman
  • Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair
  • Eduardo Franco as Argyle

Sadie Sink’s Max is the most likely of the aforementioned to die early in Season 5. Season 4 ended with Max in a medically-induced coma after her near-fatal confrontation with Vecna in Hawkins Hospital. Furthermore, Eleven, who had ventured into the Void in search of Max, was unable to locate her. Fans and the actors alike don’t know whether Max will wake up.

Sink said that she and the rest of the cast are just as clueless as the rest of us are about what will become to Max at the end of season 4, dubbed “The Piggyback.” It is still possible that Max may make an appearance in the show’s final season, but we don’t yet know how.

Stranger Things season 5 may have more supporting characters. While it’s possible that Cara Buono’s Karen Wheeler, Joe Chrest’s Ted Wheeler, Amy McNulty’s Vickie, and Gabriella Pizzolo’s Gabi all make an appearance, it’s unknown just how much of a role they will play. Season 5 might take place in the United States or Russia, which would bring back Tom Wlaschiha and Nikola Duricko’s Dmitri Antonov and Yuri Ismaylov.

As a result of the season 4 finale, there are many significant characters whose futures remain in question. A handcuffed Sam Owens (Paul Reiser) could be seen in the Nina Project, but the real-life version of Creel House’s Vecna (Jamie Campbell-Bower) had vanished after he was hurt by Nancy, Steve, and Robin. We anticipate both characters to return, but we’ll wait till Netflix confirms this before we add them to the list above. As for Campbell-Bower, he wouldn’t provide an answer on whether or not he would return to IGN (opens in new tab). I’m crossing my fingers that we find out as soon as possible.

Eddie Munson (Joe Quinn), a fan favorite from season four, will not be returning. Given that he was killed by the Demo-Bats in season 4 episode 9, it’s doubtful that Quinn will make another appearance. That is, unless he miraculously reappears as a Star Wars-like Force Ghost or a flashback.
