New Google Chromecast HD to cost $40 and go on sale soon, more product images leak

A new Chromecast gadget with the same design as the existing Chromecast with Google TV that includes a voice control appeared in a few photographs last week. That model, which was introduced in almost three years ago, offers 4K HDR output. Even though the new model may only offer 1080p quality, the Chromecast will still be controlled by the same Google Assistant remote.

New information from Snoopy Tech on Twitter suggests that the “Chromecast with Google TV (HD)” will retail for $40 and that it is already in stock at American retailers. The new Chromecast might launch soon, but we wonder if it would launch before Google’s October 6 event – though the timing suggests it may go on sale on the day of the event.

Promotional images of the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) come from WinFuture. In addition to all the white-background renders, there are several lifestyle images as well, confirming the design is identical to the current Chromecast with Google TV.

The following image shows the package contents. The new Chromecast should come with a USB-C to A cable, USB-A power adapter, Bluetooth voice remote, and generic AA batteries.

We wonder why Google would release a Chromecast that looks exactly like another model unless it planned to replace it. Perhaps Google will shift around its Chromecast strategy and offer a $40 entry-level model but then introduce a more powerful one with a higher price point and more features. Perhaps Google has plans to retire the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV. Do take these speculations with a grain of salt.

On October 6, Google will hold its annual hardware event in person where it will unveil the new Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, a new Pixel Watch, and maybe some new Nest Home hardware as well as Chromecast with Google TV.
