Here’s why a class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple’s iPad mini 6

There has been legal action brought against Apple for their “jelly scrolling” display on the iPad mini 6.

Some iPad mini 6 early adopters complained about the screen’s so-called “jelly scrolling” in September. “Wobble” is an unorthodox word for a phenomenon that occurs when one side of the screen refreshes at a much slower rate than the other.

A slow-motion video from The Verge’s Dieter Bohn shows the effect in action, making it difficult to convey.

Eventually, Apple would argue that this wasn’t an issue and assert that the apparent fault in all LED panels is in fact something that occurs in every LED screen.

It hasn’t worked for everyone, therefore a class action lawsuit has been filed to push the issue.

MacRumors says that the iPad mini 6 display “bends, warps, distorts, and obscures text and pictures leaving the Device useless,” according to a lawsuit filed by Christopher Bryan of Colorado. This MacRumors forum conversation is cited as proof that customers have had “motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, and headaches when using the Device due to the Defect.”

Despite Apple’s statements that this is a problem with all LED screens, the lawsuit says that the 2020 iPad Air doesn’t have this issue at all. An iFixIt disassembly video is then cited as proof that the flaw is there by design rather than by chance, since controller board orientation differs between the Air and the mini.

Continued marketing of the device, including in its commercials, advertising, and packaging, without revealing the nature of the Defect,” the complaint says. While the Defect prevents users from being able to read, play games, or write, Apple has suppressed this fact in order to sell the devices as if they were fully functional.

Any American who purchased an iPad mini 6 is entitled to undisclosed damages under the lawsuit, which is still pending in federal court. Class action lawsuits have a tendency to run out of steam long before they reach a conclusion in the courts, but this isn’t always the case. As part of a settlement with a class-action lawsuit brought by AppleCare customers, the company agreed to pay out $95 million.

Though some users have complained about the iPad mini 6 having issues with the Apple Pencil, we still think it’s a great tablet and a great value for the money despite this. We’ll let you know if anything changes.
