As of right now, it seems that Zoom should only be used during active calls and should be shut off when not in use.
It seems that despite Zoom’s latest effort to address this problem, many users of the popular video conferencing tool believe their Mac microphone continues to be used even after talks have concluded.
Concerned users initially brought up the issue in late 2021
I’m using the Mac OS Monterey.. Since recently, I’ve observed an orange dot on the microphone icon, and when I open Control Center, I find that Zoom is accessing the microphone. I’m not sure what’s happening. I’m not in a meeting, but the Zoom app is still open on my phone. When I’m not participating in a meeting, why would Zoom be able to access my microphone?
According to Zoom, the fault was fixed in macOS version 5.9.3, which was released on December 27 and was supposedly applied to the issue. Multiple users, on the other hand, allege that the problem persists:
There’s no evidence that the most recent upgrade has made any noticeable effect. Timing.app informed me that I had been on a two-hour Zoom call after the orange dot reappeared.

Until further notice, it seems that Zoom should only be used when on an active call and should be kept shut down at all other times.
The orange dot in macOS Monterey, which tells you when your microphone is being utilised, was mentioned by several users as a possible cause of this problem. Concerns regarding their privacy were also brought up by the students. When the epidemic began, Zoom experienced a succession of humiliating and alarming public security discoveries.
Even yet, Zoom in describing the bug highlighted “a problem with Zoom client for macOS, which might display an orange indicator light continuing to persist after having exited a meeting, conference, or webinar,” but the severity of the issue remains unknown. Zoom’s microphone warning light may be shown even if the app isn’t really using the microphone, as opposed to suggesting that Zoom is still listening in on you after conversations have concluded.
Audio has not been recorded, listened to or transmitted in any other way from this site. In a statement, a Zoom spokeswoman said the company was investigating the issue.
