When the Google Pixel 6a is finally released, it will be welcome news for those who appreciate the design of the Pixel 6, but aren’t thrilled with the price tag Google has placed on it.

It is important to note that the Pixel 6a is part of Google’s Pixel A series of phones, which are budget alternatives to its main series – for example, the Pixel 5a was a more affordable version of Google’s Pixel 5. Because the Pixel 6 family is significantly more expensive than their predecessors, the Pixel 6a is doubly important.

While we don’t know much about the Google Pixel 6a at this point – apart from the name, which Google itself has stated in a colouring book – the design, as well as some of the specifications and features, have begun to leak, and we’re getting a better sense of what to expect.

Everything we’ve heard so far about Google’s future smartphone is included here, along with details on the device’s likely release date and pricing. We’ll update this post as soon as we learn anything new about Google’s next smartphone.

Although it might be some months before the Google Pixel 6a is officially announced, leaks have already begun to circulate. Moreover, if the reports are correct, Google might very well find itself back on top with its next lower-priced device.

When the Pixel 5a was released last year, we thought it was a good phone, but it shared too many features with the Pixel 4a 5G to be considered really modern. This seems to be changing this year, with improvements expected for the cameras, CPU, and battery, as well as a new Pixel 6-style design. This may be just what Google needs to help them gain a competitive advantage among the top low-cost smartphones.

When will the Google Pixel 6a go on sale?

According to a recent rumour, the Pixel 6a will be available in May of 2022. One of the most reliable leakers of smartphone information, Max Jambor has said that the device would be released in May.

Pixel 5a was presented in August 2021, whereas Pixel 4a was released in August 2020. As a result, Google is likely to delay its release until early this year, avoiding the expected Google Pixel 7 at the end of 2022.

In addition, Google only marketed the Pixel 5a in the United States and Japan, so a more widely accessible mid-range variant may be on the way shortly.

Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, generally takes place in May, so it’s possible it may make its debut there in 2022. Expect it to arrive in the second part of the month at the earliest. A similar move was made when the Pixel 3a was unveiled by the firm.

No word yet on the price, but Google Pixel 5a was $449 (about £325 / AU$610) and the Pixel 4a 5G was $499 / £499 / AU$799, so something in that range is expected.

a look at Google Pixel 6a’s design and screen technology

The next low-cost Google phone might take design cues from the Pixel 6 according to images purportedly taken from a fake product. The most notable change is the absence of a 3.5mm audio port and the addition of a camera bar rather than a module.

The dual-lens camera is housed in a big camera block that runs horizontally across the back of the phone in the form depicted. On the front of this device, there is a punch-hole camera and a flat display.

Power and volume controls are located on the right side, while a USB-C connector and speaker and microphone grilles can be found located on the bottom side. A headphone jack is missing.

The Google Pixel 6a is said to have a glass back and dimensions of 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.7 millimetres, according to the source (or 10.4mm including the rear camera bump). According to rumours, this phone sports a 6.2-inch OLED screen, making it somewhat smaller than the Pixel 6.

The images below, apparently showing an aluminium dummy unit of the Pixel 6a, reveal exactly the same design. It’s not obvious precisely where this dummy unit came from, although accessory companies and the like sometimes utilise dummy units to assist create things before a phone’s debut.

The authenticity of these photos is unknown. Pixel phones have established the standard for other Pixel ‘a’ series phones, which have followed in their footsteps. Google Pixel 6a renderings apparently based on leaked information added validity to this theory.

The Pixel 6’s design may be controversial, but it is unquestionably unique, and its inclusion in the Pixel 6a would be a welcome development.

The 6.2-inch, 60Hz display on the Pixel 6a is based on a large specifications leak from Shadow leak. Even though it’s smaller than the Pixel 5a’s 6.4-inch screen, the purported refresh rate is even more underwhelming. Even in the price range of the Pixel a-series, many phones now use 90Hz, 120Hz, or even higher refresh rates. Given that the Pixel 6 has a 90Hz display as standard, Google’s choice to keep the Pixel 6a’s panel at 60Hz seems perplexing.

All of the cameras in the Google Pixel 6a

The Pixel 6a, according to Twitter user Mishaal Rahman, has the codename “bluejay.” Rahman discovered a plausible camera configuration for bluejay, which contains Sony IMX363, IMX386 and IMX355 sensors. Specs leak Shadow leak claims the 6a features a 12MP primary camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP selfie camera, which completes the picture.

As a point of comparison, the Pixel 5a featured the same 12-megapixel IMX363 sensor for its primary camera and an 8-megapixel IMX355 for its front-facing camera. That doesn’t mean the new 12MP IMX386 sensor is inferior than the 16MP IMX481. Compared to the IMX481’s 1.0 m pixel size, this one has 1.25 m. So, even though it has a lesser resolution, the Pixel 6a’s larger pixels should generate better photographs in general.

Specs and Review of the Pixel 6a

In the Pixel 6a, it seems that we’ll receive the Google Tensor chipset from the Pixel 6 together with 4GB or 8GB of RAM, according on information provided by Shadow leak.

That the Tensor chip is being used is fantastic news. In terms of performance, it’s on par with last year’s Snapdragon 888, which was also a flagship-worthy processor. The Pixel 6a may be the most powerful phone in its pricing category save the iPhone SE or the impending iPhone SE 3.

Using the Google Pixel 6a battery and charging

The reports indicate we’ll see a 4,800 mAh battery with 30W charging in the Pixel 6a. The Pixel 5a’s 4,680 mAh battery has a tiny capacity bump, but the Pixel 5a’s 18W charging speed has seen a significant rise.

It’s possible that Google didn’t include chargers for the Pixel 6 series. As such, it’s hardly surprising that the Pixel 6a comes without one.

An early look at the new Pixel 6A from Google.

Pixel 6a looks better than Pixel 5a did at launch based on current leaks. An updated CPU, a tweak to the ultrawide back camera, quicker charging, and a bigger battery are all included in this new mid-range phone. All of these changes are to be applauded.

The Pixel 6a must, however, be priced with care by Google. If the Pixel 5a’s $449 pricing had been slashed to $400 or less, the phone would have been even more appealing.

Additionally, we hope that the Pixel 6a will be available outside of the United States and Japan. Although computer processors are in limited supply throughout the world, Google’s supporters in other nations may still purchase the phone if they so choose.
