Groot is back!
Disney is bringing a much cuter Marvel hero to streaming later this year. Forget about Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. A series of animated shorts starring Groot, everyone’s favourite anthropomorphic tree, will premiere on August 10. (opens in new tab).
Only that it will be animated and feature Groot’s newborn form, as shown in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is known about this series at this time. On the other hand, Vin Diesel will reprise his role as Groot once more, which proves actors may succeed without a large variety of vocalisations in their repertoire.
I Am Groot, a Marvel Studios original short film, will be available on @DisneyPlus on August 10th.
The announcement was accompanied by a poster depicting Groot lounging in a hammock, listening to the Walkman of Star Lord. Two sneaky alien blobs are also on display, eager to ruin Baby Groot’s good time. The crimson cocktail in that glass isn’t going to be around for long.
It’s unclear if the other Guardians will make an appearance in animated form, or what type of mischief Groot may get up to. Both the shorts’ canon status and James Gunn’s suggestion(opens in new tab) that they may not be so are up for debate.
I Am Groot, August 10 on @disneyplus.com/MWgQGLd19h. #IAmGroot.
Because it’s not part of the main series, I Am Groot won’t be considered “canon to itself” in the same way that the upcoming holiday special for The Guardians of the Galaxy will be.
However, in the end, it’s unlikely to make a difference. As with earlier Disney Plus shorts, we can expect Baby Groot’s exploits to be very self-contained and have little bearing on the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, that’s how Dug Days and Olaf Presents worked out for the author.
But Gunn is Marvel Studios’ go-to guy for all things Guardians of the Galaxy and executive producer of the programme. Surely, he knows what’s going on.
All I Am Groot shorts are expected to be released at the same time as in previous short series, according to this tweet. The season finale of Ms Marvel, which airs July 13, and the premiere of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which airs August 17, gives us some Marvel entertainment to enjoy in between.
During the holiday season, the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be back in action with the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Meanwhile, the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for May 5, 2023.
