What exactly does Netflix have planned for 2022?
In 2022, Netflix has what seems to be a massive year. No, it’s not because of the volume of content to be offered, but rather because of the anticipated return of some well-known faces. In the new year, it’ll be difficult to get up from the sofa, thanks to the year’s most anticipated original series and films from the big red streaming monster.
Netflix is providing us more of the things we’re looking forward to, whether it’s Stranger Things Season 4 or Ozark Season 4. Season 3 of Umbrella Academy and Season 6 of Peak Blinders both have us excited. It’s also worth noting that Netflix has a new movie out called The Gray Man, which looks like the beginning of something big.
For our top streaming service rankings, we’ve compiled a list of the most popular Netflix series and movies that will be available in 2022.
Inventing Anna (February 11)
Netflix’s Inventing Anna, the brainchild of showrunner Shonda Rhimes, is ready to make a major impact. The show (Rhimes’ first since Scandal as creator and writer) aims to explain Anna Sorokin’s crazy lifestyle as Anna Delvey. Sorokin/Delvey deceived New York’s exclusive party scene for four years to pay her bills. She swore she had the cash on hand. I’m just not there right now. With Julia Garner as Sorokin and Anna Chlumsky as the journalist seeking to discover her identity, the film boasts a strong supporting cast.
The Cuphead Show (February 18)
Cuphead, an independent video game that is as frustratingly tough to play as it is gorgeously made, already looks like a classic piece of animation from Mickey Mouse’s Steamboat Willie period. Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Netflix (which has a strong affinity for video games since since The Witcher became one of its most popular series) scooped up this sitcom about anthropomorphic cups that find themselves into trouble. Yes, you did read it correctly. Oh, and Wayne Brady provides the voice of the evil King Dice.
Stranger Things season 4 (Summer 2022)
Stranger Things season 4 has been a long time in the making, and it seems like we’ve been waiting for it for years. ST3 premiered in July of this year, which seems like a lifetime ago considering all that has transpired since then. Is our excitement for the return of Eleven, Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and the rest of the group diminished as a result of the lengthy delay? It hasn’t changed a thing; in fact, it has just increased our expectations. For starters, we’re interested in learning how Hopper survived the tense finale of season three, as well as how a shift in setting from Hawkins to California will alter the characters’ relationships.
Umbrella Academy season 3 (2022)
It was a fun and enjoyable slant on the superhero genre in the first season of The Umbrella Academy, but Season Two took it to a whole new level. UE2 was able to cover everything from the civil rights movement to mental health to sexuality since the bulk of the action took place in 1960s Dallas, which allowed the developers to tie together their time-jumping, alternate-universe mythology into more complicated knots. All of this has piqued our interest in Umbrella Academy season 3 more than virtually any other Netflix programme set to premiere in 2022. We don’t know much about it yet, but we’re convinced that it will be both wonderful and perplexing in equal measure.
The Crown season 5 (November 2022)
All hail Imelda Staunton, the next queen of the United Kingdom. Following Olivia Colman’s successful transition from Claire Foy’s role as Queen Elizabeth II, the actress will take over as Elizabeth II. Because Colman and Foy were both nominated for Emmys for their performances, Staunton may be nominated for an award next year as well. The Crown is replacing its whole cast in accordance with its usual rotation. Jonathan Pryce will portray Prince Philip, Dominic West will portray Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki will portray Princess Diana, all of whom will appear with Staunton. There will be no significant leap forward in time, since the fifth season will take up where the fourth season left off — with Charles and Diana’s marriage on the rocks — rather than too far forward. The exhibition, which will run from the early to mid-1990s, will cover a wide range of topics, including Diana’s explosive Panorama interview, her little black vengeance dress, and their separation and divorce. Buckle up, because it’s going to be a wild journey from here on out (even if you tend to fall down a Wikipedia hole like me).
Bridgerton season 2 (2022)
In certain cases, a “meet-cute” turns into a “meet-I despise you.” That was the case for Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s novel, and it is also the case for Bridgerton’s Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) and Viscount Anthony Bridgerton in the film Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey). He takes the stage in Bridgerton season 2 now that his sister Daphne has tied the knot with the handsome Duke of York. In order to locate a wife, Anthony is resolved to go to the marriage market. His reputation as a rake, on the other hand, has grown considerably — something that the whip-smart and gorgeous Kate is well aware of. It seems like Anthony will fall for the one lady in the London tonne who isn’t interested in him… at least until he shows himself worthy of her affections.
Grace and Frankie final episodes (early 2022)
Grace and Frankie, a Netflix Original series, will end its seventh season in the early part of 2022, after the release of the first four episodes of its seventh and final season on the streaming service in August. Surprise, surprise, the split of episodes was caused by production delays when the Covid-19 outbreak forced the shutdown of production, since only four episodes had been filmed at the time. Grace and Nick’s relationship was in disarray as the series ended, as he was ready to be released from jail and Frankie was having difficulties laundering Nick’s money.
The Sandman (2022)
An adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic novels is coming to Netflix, and it will be available on the streaming service in the coming months. With a stellar ensemble that includes Tom Sturridge as Morpheus/Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, and David Thewlis as John Dee, The Sandman is a must-see film. With Gaiman’s input, we can only hope that The Sandman is a much superior adaption of Netflix’s high-profile flops of 2021, which included Cowboy Bebop and Jupiter’s Legacy, both of which were cancelled quickly.
The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022)
In the Witcher universe, Geralt of Rivia is neither the beginning and the finish; in fact, Netflix will extend the Witcher Cinematic Universe even further with The Witcher: Blood Origin, a six-part miniseries that will premiere in 2019. Sophia Brown will portray Éile, a warrior with a passion for music, and she has a beautiful singing voice in her own right. Yes, Éile is off on the journey of a lifetime, abandoning her duties as a member of the Queen’s guard to pursue a career in singing on the road. Because the series (which takes place 1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia’s series) is centred on the birth of the first Witcher and the events that brought man and monster together in the Conjunction of the Spheres, it’s likely that this will not persist for very long. If it isn’t enough, what is? Scian, an elf who wields tremendous swords, is played by Michelle Yeoh, who also appears in the film.
Peaky Blinders season 6 (2022)
Guess who’s making a comeback? Netflix has spent considerably in the production of two sequels to Knives Out, and Daniel Craig now has a fresh murderer’s row of prospective assassins to contend with. Another cast member announced for Knives Out 2 is Dave Bautista, who joins Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick, and Ethan Hawke in the film. Not only that, but it will include Kathryn Hahn, extending the Hahnnaissance that WandaVision began with her appearance. There is no news on what will transpire during the squeal, but we do know that it will be place in a new location and will include a fresh mystery.
Sex Education season 4 (2022)
Now that Headmistress Hope (Jemima Kirk) seems to be gone from Moordale, it’s time to move on. Both Maeve and Otis will head into the next season wondering, “What the hell is going on here?” Maeve’s departure to America in season 3 could have allowed us to witness some growth. Eric, Adam, Ola, and Lily all seem to be in excellent health. We’re interested to see how Aimee manages her life now that she’s more self-sufficient, and to learn more about Jean’s child’s paternity. There should be more of Sophia, Jackson’s mother (Hannah Waddingham). Theodore Roosevelt
Knives Out 2 (2022)
Guess who’s back, amirite? In fact, Netflix has put a lot of money into two sequels to Knives Out, giving Daniel Craig a fresh murderer’s row of villains to choose from. Knives Out 2 cast members Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick, and Ethan Hawke have also been announced… WandaVision launched a resurgence of Kathryn Hahn, thus this new series will include her as well. It is unknown what will happen in the squeal, but we know that it will be place in a new location and include a fresh mystery.
The Gray Man (2022)
With The Gray Man, Netflix isn’t happy to just be the service with most of the greatest names in television programming. What’s the point of seeing another another action movie franchise? When it comes to who is behind it, it comes from two of the top Marvel directors, Joe and Anthony Russo (The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame). The film stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling in the key characters of a betrayal at the CIA. Along with Alfre Woodard and Billy Bob Thornton, other notable actors in the film include Ana de Armans and Régé-Jean Page.
Pinocchio (late 2022)
When it comes to the two Pinocchio films that will be released in 2022, Netflix seems to have the upper hand (Disney’s is a live-action adventure). There may not be a trailer for Netflix’s Guillermo del Toro-directed stop-motion animation adaptation yet, but that’s all you need to know. Among the film’s many credits are director, screenplay, and production credits shared by the cinematic genius. “The Talking Cricket” is voiced by Ewan McGregor, while Mangiafuoco, the theatrical director and puppeteer, is voiced by Ron Perlman. All of the cast members are here: Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett Tim Blake Nelson and Finn Wolfhard.
