Initially, the WhatsApp mobile app required authentication for an account used on another device, such as a computer, and it linked a user account to a web browser using a QR code. While the initial link is still required, the linked phone with the WhatsApp app is no longer required once the link is established, so you may continue to use WhatsApp on your iPad without needing your smartphone.
The steps below demonstrate how to link your WhatsApp account to your iPad utilising the service’s new Multi-Device capability, which is presently in beta.
- Launch WhatsApp on your iPhone.
- Select Settings -> Linked Devices.
- Tap Multi-Device Beta, then tap the blue Join Beta button.
- Tap Back and select Link a Device on the previous screen.
- On your iPad, open Safari or another web browser and go to web.whatsapp.com, then scan the QR code that appears using your iPhone.
Following these steps, your device will be linked to your WhatsApp account, and you will be able to use WhatsApp on your iPad to send and receive messages as well as watch conversation threads without the need for your phone to be connected to the internet.
Keep in mind that you cannot currently remove WhatsApp messages or discussion threads from your iPad.
