According to Apple, to enable Face ID while wearing a mask, an iPhone “can distinguish the distinctive characteristics surrounding the eye area to authenticate.” Apple, on the other hand, warns that using Face ID with a mask is less secure and that the biometric authentication system is “most accurate” when used with full-face recognition.
Unfortunately, Face ID With a Mask is only enabled on certain of Apple’s most recent iPhones, despite the fact that Face ID has been available since 2017 with the release of the iPhone X. Face ID with a Mask is only available on iPhones 12 and later, so you’ll need an iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, or Apple iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, or 13 Pro Max to use it.
When you upgrade your iPhone to iOS 15.4, you’ll notice a setup procedure that leads you through the process of configuring Face ID With a Mask. It’s worth noting that you’ll need iOS 15.4 loaded on your iPhone to see these options, and they won’t appear if you have an iPhone 11 or before.
- On your iPhone, launch the Settings app.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Face ID & Passcode.
