Apple’s brand-new AirPods Pro 2 are just as difficult to fix as the original models, according to deconstruction specialists iFixit.
iFixit verifies that it is definitely impossible to disassemble a pair of AirPods Pro 2 and the charging case without destroying them, which renders them beyond repair. This is demonstrated in a recent YouTube video.
“The most widely used earphones in the world are Apple’s AirPods, which are also among the hardest to repair. The AirPods Pro 2 provide the flagship line a bump across the board—apparently with the exception of the environment. While personalised spatial audio can provide a wonderful listening experience, can it take away the guilt associated with wearing irreparable future-e-waste? Could Apple finally be thinking differently with these new pods?”
The same old tale
In the shape of the original AirPods Pro, Apple has long produced some of the best iPhone wireless earbuds, but they were roundly criticised for their unrepairability. With the updated version that went on sale last week, it’s unlikely that anybody really anticipated that to change, but iFixit disassembled them to confirm.
Spoiler alert: There won’t be any repairs for the AirPods Pro 2 soon.
The labour required to get inside a set of AirPods Pro 2 earphones is demonstrated in the video, making repairs virtually difficult. Even worse, iFixit was unable to access the battery pack without cutting through it, which is something that should never be done due to the risk of rupturing the battery and starting a fire.
Although it’s unclear at this moment, considering the updates to both the standard AirPods and the AirPods Pro, it regrettably appears doubtful that Apple would decide to make future earbuds more repairable.
