Mercedes equips automobiles with a 31-speaker Dolby Atmos system to create a “concert hall on wheels”

Mercedes-Benz has spent almost a century establishing itself as one of the most exclusive names in the car business, but the company is gearing ready to amp up its luxury label even more.

The German automaker has revealed that Dolby Atmos would be available in a number of its high-end cars starting next year, starting with the Mercedes-Maybach and S-Class.

Mercedes claims that by combining the technology with its existing Burmester 4D and 3D sound systems, the in-car Dolby Atmos experience would turn these vehicles into “state-of-the-art music halls on wheels.”

A £8,000 option is available for the Mercedes EQS.

This Atmos-enhanced Burmester system, which is made up of – wait for it – 31 loudspeakers and eight sound transducers (also known as exciters), will provide drivers with an “unprecedented sound experience,” making it seem like their vehicle “is almost like a live concert,” according to Mercedes executive Britta Seeger in a statement.

The Dolby Atmos technology, which adds more space, clarity, and depth to music, is incredibly popular right now, and it’s found in everything from the greatest soundbars to the best TVs, but Mercedes’ cooperation with the audio giant is one of the few occasions we’ve seen it in a car.

Although this isn’t the first time – the award previously went to the equally luxurious Lucid Air – Mercedes’ unique combination of Dolby Atmos and its existing Burmester sound system should ensure that the brand remains at the top of the heap when it comes to providing drivers with the best audio experience possible.

“At Dolby, we are enthusiastic about expanding the Dolby Atmos Music experience so that consumers can enjoy it everywhere, and Mercedes-Benz shares our goal,” said John Couling, a senior executive at Dolby Laboratories.

“Whether in the driver’s seat or as a passenger, the integration of Dolby Atmos into the S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach will give an extra excellent feature to consumers,” Couling continued.

The Mercedes-Maybach with Dolby Atmos will be available starting in summer 2022, and the system will also be available in other vehicles compatible with the new MBUX system, which will be released with the new Mercedes S-Class later next year.

Mercedes hasn’t said how much the option will cost, but given that the Burmester-equipped Maybach currently costs roughly $190,000 / £130,000 / AU$245,000, we’d expect another four-digit increase on an already exorbitant price tag.
