Even though the first season of The Rings of Power just aired on Prime Video, the cast and crew are already planning season 2.

At The Rings of Power’s UK junket, the cast members refused to provide TechRadar a specific start date for filming the second episode of the epic fantasy series on Prime Video. That is to be anticipated given the amount of secrecy surrounding Amazon’s Lord of the Rings season 1 and the overall production.

Elrond in the episode, played by Robert Aramayo, commented, “I’m not sure what we can say about that.” The actor who portrays Galadriel, Morfydd Clark, teasedly added, “We start filming shortly – and we’re extremely excited.”

The Rings of Power season 2 cast was reluctant to provide any specific information on when filming will begin, but executive producer Lindsey Weber was more willing. And from what Weber informed us, principal photography on the upcoming season of the programme is almost set to start.

Weber stated the following in response to a question on the recent purchase of The Lord of the Rings IP by Embracer Group: “We’re entirely preoccupied with this [production on season two].” And the shooting season begins in a few short weeks.

Anyone who has been following the progress of The Rings of Power won’t be overly surprised to learn that a second season is planned. According to Deadline(opens in new tab), Amazon Studios approved a second season in November 2019. This action not only demonstrated how confidence the corporation was in its Lord of the Rings translation, but it also would have allowed the cast and crew to shoot seasons 1 and 2 concurrently.

Regrettably, Covid-19 scuttled such intentions. The global pandemic forced the cancellation of the programme in March 2020 after only one month of full production in New Zealand. Principal photography resumed in May 2020, with the New York City Department

The Rings of Power season 2 will soon start production, barring any similar issues or a revival of Covid-19 in the upcoming weeks. Time magazine claims that filming will probably begin in October 2022, which is consistent with the date Weber stated to TechRadar.

The upcoming season of the Prime Video series won’t, however, be shot in New Zealand like the first season or other live-action Lord of the Rings endeavours. Instead, production will relocate to the UK, with Variety claiming that set-based filming would predominantly take place at Bray Film Studios in Berkshire and Bovingdon Airfield in Hemel Hempstead.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who co-created the show, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that they had been looking for potential filming locations in the UK as recently as June. Scotland was reportedly a top contender for shooting scenes on location, but it’s not clear if this is still the case. However, soon Amazon will likely reveal that filming has started on The Rings of Power season 2.
