The emoji/icon you choose should now appear in the status bar of your iPhone, next to the clock. You may change the emoji at any moment by going into the Focus mode preferences and selecting a different one.

If you have Location Services enabled and an app uses your current location, your icon/emoji will temporarily disappear because there isn’t enough area in the status bar for it. If something is constantly using your location (for example, a weather widget), it will not appear at all, in which case you must go to Settings -> Privacy and turn off Location Services.
