Batman: Gotham Knights is a center game about battling wrongdoing without the assistance of the Dark Knight himself. Brought to you by WB Montreal, this superhuman activity game puts a remarkable contort on the cherished Batman: Arkham establishment by putting the focus on Batman companions, Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood

Highlighting a unique story that powers our legends to get by in a world without Batman (and a few exceptionally thrilling antiheroes), Gotham Knights could be the following extraordinary DC activity title. Here’s beginning and end we know up to this point, including the game’s trailers, its delivery date and a few expanded takes a gander at ongoing interaction.

Batman Gotham Knights trailers

Premiered at DC FanDome, the debut Gotham Knights trailer introduces our heroes while setting up the game’s story. In this original narrative, Batman has apparently been killed, forcing his closest partners — Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin and Red Hood — to team up to save Gotham.

As many suspected, the main villains appear to be the Court of Owls: a dangerous crime family from recent Batman comics with deep ties to the Wayne family. Perennial Batman baddie Mr. Freeze also makes an appearance, so it won’t just the Owls the foursome must face.

The second Gotham Knights trailer was released during last year’s DC FanDome event and focuses on the game’s story. A sinister voiceover, soon revealed to be iconic Batman villain Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot, suggests that the quartet of heroes “don’t stand a chance” against the Court. It looks like the events of Gotham Knight are going to push the Bat-family to the very brink.

Finally, we got an “Official Villains Trailer(opens in new tab)” during gamescom 2022. This trailer shows off the villains Nightwing and the gang will be going up against in Gotham Knights, some of whom we have already seen. Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls are familiar faces from previous trailers, but Harley Quinn and Clayface are the latest additions to Gotham Knights’s rogues’ gallery.

While the in-engine footage is nice to see, it does little to move the needle. However, the announcement at the end is a bit of a surprise. The release date for Gotham Knights has been moved up four days to October 21. While not a significant change, moving release dates up is a rare move in the video games industry. Hopefully, it means that the game will be fairly polished once it arrives.

Batman Gotham Knights release date

Gotham Knight is confirmed to be launching on October 21, 2022. Originally unveiled with a release date targeting 2021, the game was subsequently delayed in March last year to October 25, 2022. It was then surprisingly moved up during the Official Villains trailer at gamescom 2022 to October 21.

Regardless, we’re now just a few months from stepping back into the streets of Gotham. The game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. A PS4 and Xbox One version of Gotham Knights was planned but was recently canceled in order “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.” The game is now exclusive to next-gen consoles.

Batman Gotham Knights gameplay

Based on a lengthy gameplay trailer released by WB Montreal, Gotham Knights looks like it will deliver the tight melee combat and open-world exploration of the Arkham games with a new co-op twist with some RPG elements. The four playable characters: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin can all be leveled up with new gear and abilities as you progress, and up to two players can team up online in co-op.

Similar to their appearances in previous Batman games, each character will have their own unique strengths and abilities. Batgirl excels at close-range combat and martial arts, while Nightwing uses his iconic Escrima Sticks for both long-distance and close-range staff attacks. Robin battles with a staff and has stealth abilities, while the volatile Red Hood is an expert in firearms. It also looks like you’ll be able to sync up with your partner and combine your abilities for some exciting-looking team attacks.

Each hero has their own unique traversal abilities, and will even be able to drive vehicles such as the iconic Batcycle for navigating Gotham’s five fully explorable boroughs.

A second gameplay demo has given us an extended look at Red Hood and Nightwing in action. Curiously, this presentation confirms that the usually superpower-free Red Hood has “gained new abilities after being resurrected by an assassin cult.”

We see the hero leaping above the city streets using magical jump pads, which is definitely not accurate to the comics, but does look pretty darn fun all the same. We also see Nightwing use a glider to keep pace. Each hero will have their own unique way of traversing Gotham, as well as all having access to vehicles like the Bat-cycle.

The gameplay demo also shows off combat both in co-op and single-player. As noted above each hero has their own unique powers and equipment, and it looks like team moves are also possible allowing heroes to combine their powers for even greater damage.

This gameplay also highlights the importance of stealth and gives us a further peek at the game’s story. It appears that the heroes are still struggling to come to terms with the death of Batman, and the absence left by the Dark Knight is most definitely being felt.

Each hero will have a different set of powers, weapons and abilities. Plus, each will have unique animations and takedown moves. We’re sure each individual player will quickly find a favorite that suits their playstyle best.

You can also team up with a friend in two player co-op. Even better, rumors have indicated that the game might even offer full four player co-op, but as of right now that hasn’t been confirmed.
