As of this writing, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that the AP is reporting that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted “Squid Game,” the first non-English language series to compete for television’s biggest award, has a historic adversary in “Succession,” the satirical drama about the affluent and cruel.

South Korean-set “Squid Game,” which depicts the destitute as game pieces in a merciless competition, was nominated for outstanding drama at the September Emmy Awards. At the most recent Emmys, in 2020, “Succession” won eight honors, including best drama.

Comedy series “Ted Lasso” was the most nominated and may win the award for best comedy series again this year, as Academy voters were unfazed by its second season’s shift into a more emotional and somber territory.

There were a record amount of submissions for the nominations, according to Television Academy President Frank Scherm, which indicates that series production is back to normal after being severely curtailed due to the epidemic.

In the past, broadcast and cable networks controlled the Emmys, but the emergence of streaming services has altered the dynamic—and potentially even the awards—in some respects. With an eye on the worldwide market, Netflix’s “Squid Game” has been nominated for an Emmy.

Since “The Crown,” which won the most Drama Desk Honors in 2021, wasn’t shown within the qualifying period, it won’t be eligible for the awards this year.

The Emmy Awards will be held on September 12th on NBC, with a host to be chosen soon.
