After the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 this past summer, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have a lot to live up to. Samsung improved its clamshell-style foldable phone and introduced a considerably more affordable $999 starting price with that model.

However, there’s always potential for improvement, particularly in the newly growing category of foldable phones. Samsung has plenty of room to improve the Galaxy Z Flip 3 when it releases a new model later this year. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 could be a game-changer.

We’re getting closer to discovering more about Samsung’s rumored next-generation Galaxy Z foldable, which is said to be more cheap than the current model. For the Galaxy Z Flip 4 to be among the greatest foldable phones, we’ve compiled everything we’ve heard and what we hope to see from it.

Releasing date and pricing estimates for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4

Release dates won’t be a mystery for much longer. The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event will begin at 9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT on August 10th. With a foldable phone prominently featured in its event invitation, we expect both the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 to be unveiled at the event.

Samsung has stated that the company’s August event would be centered around foldable phones. Samsung president and head of mobile TM Roh wrote in a blog post publicizing the event: “I can’t wait to show you the potential of our new Samsung Galaxy foldables as the ultimate tool for both productivity and self-expression” (opens in new tab).

According to Jon Prosser, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to be released on this day. The retail release is expected to take place on August 26th.

The event on August 10th is expected to include a portion centered around foldables. Check out this sneak peek at Samsung’s Unpacked Event in August 2022 to see what the company might have in store.

We don’t expect Samsung to change the price of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 from its current level. After all, the lower starting price of $999 of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was one of its distinguishing features.

Samsung’s next Flip appears to be growing more expensive rather than less expensive, according to leaker Sudhanshu Ambhore, who has a good track record of being correct with his disclosures.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to start at €1,080 for the 128GB variant, €1,160 for the 256GB model, and €1,280 for the 512GB flip phone. The pricing are all in Euros. The price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 was €1,049. The greatest Flip 4 could cost $1,097 rather than $999 if you convert these precise conversions to US dollars, however this would show that the best Flip 4 is more expensive than $999.

It appears that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 could see a modest price increase, according to yet another price leak from a European shop. This leak also says that the Flip 4 could start around €1,080, which is an increase of about $31.50 compared to Sudhanshu Ambhore’s projection.

That’s not all: Another Korean source claims that the Z Flip 4’s pricing is going up by a tiny amount. At least the Z Flip 3 has 128GB of storage by default, which is an improvement over the Z Flip 3.

If Samsung makes an announcement on August 10th, you can pre-register at Samsung.com(opens in new tab). A $200 credit is available if you buy a phone, a watch and earbuds at the same time. If you buy the phone via Samsung, you’ll get a $100 credit to use on future purchases on the company’s website.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

It’s possible that Samsung will make a modest change to the current model’s design with the Z Flip 4, which we’ve seen and heard so far. Samsung skipped the second generation of the Galaxy Z Flip to align with the Galaxy Z Fold line.

This is beautifully illustrated by a number of renders. According to reports, the Z Flip 4 would maintain its classic form factor but feature a larger outside display. Inside, according to Ice Universe’s leaks, the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s display crease would be less noticeable, which would address one of the most common criticisms of foldable phones: their bulk.

According to TechTalkTV(opens in new tab), yet another batch of leaked pictures of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has appeared. The wrinkle is hardly noticeable in this picture.

The Z Flip 4 could receive a revised hinge, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Even if Samsung’s foldables will be more portable with the larger Fold, we won’t complain about a more streamlined design.

Advertisements

Images of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 that were released by Evan Blass show a smaller hinge. Images released by 91mobiles(opens in new tab) claim to reveal a less tapered shape and a more pronounced camera hump. Could this mean that Samsung is enhancing the cameras on this phone?

The only rumor we have to rely on is that there will be four color options. According to reports, they will come in a variety of shades of gold, silver, blue, and violet.

To get an idea of what the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will look like, the South Korean company has produced an official teaser trailer for its Unpacked event. Everything is veiled in obscurity.

That teaser has a familiar look to it. There are flat corners and what appears to be a fingerprint sensor on the side of the device. As expected, the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s design isn’t going to be significantly altered.

Rumored features of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4

According to early leaks, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will look almost identical to the current generation. Samsung is rumored to preserve the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s 6.7-inch internal and 1.9-inch exterior displays. That makes sense, given the Flip 3’s attractive design and the usefulness of the external display.

For the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Ross Young predicts a larger cover display of at least two inches, with Yogesh Brar confirming that it will be 2.1 inches in size.

In addition, we’ve heard rumours that Samsung is testing an under-display camera version of the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Considering the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s terrible one, we hope it’s not the last. In order to reduce the overall weight of the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung is allegedly working on a hinge redesign. The Oppo Find N’s gapless design is exactly what we’re looking for.

Claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have the same 3,300mAh battery as its predecessor have been made in the past few months. Two leaks, on the other hand, claim that Samsung intends to boost the total battery capacity by 400 mAh. Even while that’s a significant improvement, Samsung still has work to do to enhance the Z Flip’s battery life.

Instead of the current standard 8 Gen 1 chip featured in phones like the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung might use the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU to run the phone. According to these leaked benchmarks, it would have a significant performance gain over last year’s model and several other smartphones that have been released this year.

The first Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1-powered phone we tested was the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro. A switch to Qualcomm’s newest chipset could provide the Galaxy Z Flip 4 a performance increase over its predecessor, as seen by the ROG Phone 6 Pro benchmarks.

Another possible resemblance to the previous generation is a fingerprint sensor that is located on the power button. Even though the company has been working on an under-display fingerprint sensor for its foldables, Samsung has decided that it is better off without it for the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4.

It is possible that the phone will be renamed later this year. The Galaxy Flip 3 is now being sold in various European nations as a response to Russian officials using the letter Z to advocate the invasion of Ukraine. For the upcoming Galaxy Flip 4, Samsung may have decided to eliminate the Z altogether and instead call it the Galaxy Flip 4.

What we’d like to see in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4:

As an upgrade to the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung delivered a solid product with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Even yet, it wasn’t quite there yet. When Samsung unveils the Galaxy Z Flip 4, we expect it to address some of these pressing issues.

Battery life is improved.

Sadly, there was no way to extend the battery life of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. In Tom’s Guide’s battery life test, the adaptive refresh rate setting didn’t even last six hours. You should be ashamed of yourself. In part, we attribute this to the larger cover panel and the 120Hz internal screens. If you purchased the Galaxy Z Flip 3, we advised that you have a charger nearby.

Improved battery life is something we’d want to see on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Samsung may not be able to meet this simple need unless they increase the size of their power packs. It’s encouraging to know that the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset should help the Z Flip 4 last longer between charges.

Durability has been improved.

There have been instances of Galaxy Z Flip 3 handsets breaking within a few months of purchase, despite Samsung making significant improvements to the durability of its last series of foldables. It’s alarming to hear that phones don’t last a year, even though we haven’t had the chance to test these claims ourselves. Foldables have a long way to go in this area.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4’s durability and longevity might use some work. A year or even a few months after spending $999 on a phone, no one wants it to break or become unusable. Perhaps the rumored hinge tweak can help in this respect.

Hinge with no gaps

A significant area in which Oppo beat Samsung in the foldable phone market is the hinge design, which the Korean company pioneered. In the Oppo Find N, the hinge is completely gapless. The internal screens should be protected from dust and damage because there is no gap between the displays at the hinge.

Our ideal design for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (and the foldable version) would be a hinge with no gaps. Take a cue from Oppo’s strategy, Samsung.

faster recharging

Wired charging on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is woefully slow compared to the industry and even more so for phones that cost more than $1,000. Flip 3’s battery life was so awful that we wanted it to charge significantly faster than the OnePlus 9 Pro, which can charge at 65W.

Advertisements

At the absolute least, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 should have a 25W battery, which is what the Galaxy S22 has. (The wired charging power of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus is 45 watts.)

A long-distance lens, or telephoto.

Samsung may have made the decision not to incorporate a telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in order to save money. Both the main and ultrawide-angle cameras were on the phone. The loss of a 3x telephoto lens on the Flip 3 is obvious when compared to the $999 Galaxy S22 Plus.

Advertisements

Even if it’s simply a 2x or 2.5x zoom, we’d want to see a telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. While there are tradeoffs to be made when choosing a foldable, Samsung’s decision to omit camera functionality appears more difficult to justify.
