Latest: 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo clears physical, won’t land on PUP list

Reports from NFL insider Ian Rapoport state that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers passed his physical exam on Tuesday and would not be placed on the team’s list of players who are “physically unable to function.”

Unless he is on the 49ers’ Week 1 roster, Garoppolo’s $7.5 million injury guarantee will be canceled, leaving him with no guaranteed money on his contract whatsoever. That’s not going to happen, unfortunately.

A few weeks ago, the quarterback began throwing again after undergoing surgery on his shoulder on March 8. Before the 2022 season begins, the general public expects him to be traded.

Kyle Shanahan, the team’s head coach, stated on Tuesday: “We don’t plan on practicing him with the team.”

Garoppolo and his representatives have been granted authority to seek a trade as the 49ers begin training camp this week. Before the surgery, the 49ers had planned to trade the veteran quarterback, but they were unable to find a new home for him. Trey Lance, the 49ers’ third-round draft pick last year, is now the team’s starting quarterback.

Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers by the Patriots in 2017. As the starter for the San Francisco 49ers during the regular season, he is 31-14.

Last year, Garoppolo, 30, threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, completing 68.3 percent of his passes. Eight seasons in the NFL have seen him throw 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns and 38 interceptions.
