One of the more intriguing innovations tipped for Apple’s next flagship is an always-on display (AOD) in the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro. In addition to appearing to validate this, new data discovered by 9to5Mac demonstrates how it will improve on existing AODs on rival phones.

Even though proof of iOS 16’s support for always-on displays had already been found, 9to5Mac has now discovered an additional crucial piece of evidence. As part of the updated iOS 16 wallpapers, Apple has added a “Sleep” mode that darkens and desaturates the usual image. When the phone is locked, this feature is activated.

The GIF below illustrates what I mean. Using the AOD on the iPhone 14 is a natural extension of Apple’s strategy for the Apple Watch 7 and preceding models.

Since the top Android phones have had always-on displays for years, we’ve been waiting for Apple to follow suit. In light of evidence like this and reports from reputable leakers, the iPhone 14 Pro appears to be the iPhone that will ultimately introduce it and go one step further by displaying the entire wallpaper rather than a blank screen with widgets.

As with the iPhone 13, we don’t expect this functionality to be included in the entry-level iPhone 14, as its ProMotion adaptive refresh rate is insufficient for an effective AOD. As with prior generations, the ordinary iPhone 14 and the speculated new iPhone 14 Max will be devoid of a telephoto lens and potentially even the A16 Bionic chip that we expect to power the Pro models. In this comparison of the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro, we look at all the rumors surrounding the devices’ differences.

Additionally, a new 48MP rear camera is expected, as is a revised notch with pill- and punch-hole-shaped holes for the Pro model. Take a peek at our iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro rumor sites to learn more about the latest leaks and rumors.
