The most recent developer beta of Apple’s iPhone software adds additional functionality.

Since Apple just updated its iOS 16 developer beta, a public beta of the software may be coming shortly (July 6). The third developer beta of iOS 16 for the iPhone is now available for download from Apple’s developer website. It includes certain features not included in past versions of the iPhone software.

The public beta for iOS 16, the upcoming release of Apple’s iPhone software that will go live in the autumn, is one step closer with each developer beta. Apple mentioned a public beta for iOS 16 in July at last month’s iOS 16 preview at WWDC 2022. The stage may now be finally be prepared for the software launch after well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman predicted an iOS 16 public beta release for the week of July 11(opens in new tab).

But before that public beta is released, the most recent developer beta makes significant changes and improvements to Apple’s iPhone software, including the addition of a brand-new feature and some capabilities that were initially teased during the iOS 16 demo.

According to information found online, the third developer beta of iOS 16 has the following changes.

iOS 16’s Lockdown mode

The most notable addition to iOS 16 beta 3 is a function Apple hasn’t before mentioned. The new security feature, dubbed Lockdown Mode, is marketed as a way to shield iPhone users from mercenary spyware that may be targeting them. Obviously, that’s a small portion of customers, but that doesn’t change the fact that the iPhone will soon have this brand-new feature.

Most message attachment types other than photos will be restricted while Lockdown Mode is on, and link previews in Messages are disabled. When web browsing is blocked, just-in-time Javascript compilation is also disabled, unless you specifically choose to exclude a trusted website from Lockdown Mode. If you haven’t spoken to the person who is inviting you before, you will be unable to accept things like FaceTime calls. When an iPhone is locked, it is unable to connect wirelessly to a device or computer, and configuration profiles cannot be downloaded to your phone.

Once more, all of these features—which are also present in iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura—are drastic precautions intended to protect a limited subset of users from sophisticated spyware.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

Apple highlighted the inclusion of iCloud Shared Photo Library, which enables cloud-based photo sharing with up to six additional people, during its WWDC preview of iOS 16. You will be able to add photographs directly from the Camera app, and anybody with access to a Shared Photo Library has equal rights to upload, edit, and remove photos. Even when the individuals who have access to your Shared Photo Library are close by, a proximity-sharing feature is available.

iCloud Shared Photo Library was absent from the first two developer betas of iOS 16 but is included in beta 3. You may enable and configure a Shared Library under the Photos section of the Settings app.

AFib history in the Health app

AFib history records atrial fibrillation by partnering with an Apple Watch to determine when a person encounters irregular heart rhythms and for how long. This feature was also hailed by Apple but was absent from prior iOS 16 betas. The function is now a part of the Health app, but to use it, you’ll also need watchOS 9’s most recent beta.

Clownfish wallpaper in iOS 16

If you have a good memory, you might recall the clownfish wallpaper that displayed during Steve Jobs’ initial iPhone demo. In the ensuing 15 years, the wallpaper has disappeared, but iOS 16 seems to be altering that. Though not yet available to all users, some claim that beta 3’s wallpaper option now exists. More lock screen fonts for iOS 16

As you are probably aware, iOS 16 introduces the ability to modify the appearance of your lock screen, allowing you to alter the typeface used to display the time and date on your iPhone. There were six different font selections in early betas of iOS 16; with developer beta 3 of iOS 16, there are now eight alternatives.

A change has also been made to one of the lock screen widgets that Apple offers. When your iPhone is locked, the calendar widget now hides information about your next appointment; when you unlock your phone, the information is visible.

Other iOS 16 developer beta 3 changes

There are further changes introduced by iOS 16 beta 3. Tasks that are both due today and past due can now be included in the badge count that appears over the Reminders app’s icon thanks to a new setting. Stage Manager has seen various modifications in the iPadOS 16 beta, including an enhanced multitasking menu and a window selector for apps that have many windows.

How to get the iOS 16 developer beta 3

To run iOS 16, you’ll need an iPhone 8 or later. We have information on how to get the iOS 16 developer beta as well as the complete list of devices that are supported by iOS 16. To put it briefly, though, you must pay a $99 yearly fee to Apple in order to be a registered developer in order to obtain this new version. One of the reasons we suggest waiting until the public beta is out is because of this. The iOS 16 public beta will not only have additional bugs fixed, but it is also available for free download to everyone.

To get the most recent version, all you need to do is launch the Settings app, click to General, and then select Software Update if you already have the developer beta installed. You should be able to download and install the third developer beta for iOS 16 from there.
