The Plot

Coraline Jones is a young girl whose parents are workaholics who frequently neglect her. She has been relocated to a new home in another city and is struggling to adjust to her new surroundings. She does, however, become friends with the landlady’s grandson Wyborn and a black cat.

Wyborn presents Coraline a doll he finds in his grandmother’s trunk one day. It has button eyes and resembles her in certain ways. Coraline follows the doll to a hidden entrance in the living room with a bricked-up tunnel behind it.

A mouse wakes Coraline awake that night. She follows it and discovers that the concealed entrance is no longer a bricked-up path, but rather a doorway to a parallel realm. Coraline enters the portal and is transported to a weirdly idealised version of her own world.

Here she meets another version of her parents, both of them have button eyes and are the polar opposites of her parents in terms of love and compassion. Coraline is bored after living in a frustrating home and visits the other world twice more, unaware of the sinister secrets it holds.

Her “other mother” urges her to remain forever on her third visit. The sole requirement is that she also have buttons sewn on her eyes. Coraline flees in terror, but her “other mother” apprehends her and imprisons her in a room behind a mirror.

There she discovers the truth about this planet and how her other mother, or The Beldam, had reaped countless other victims over time and torn the souls from their bodies by sewing buttons on their eyes. The spirits were then hidden by the Beldam in various locations of the parallel realm.

Coraline will have to fool The Beldam in order to save the victims, including her true parents.
