In the short term, Apple isn’t planning to release an iPhone Flip, although plans might change over time. A foldable iPhone may not be a reality this year, but many evidence indicate that Apple is working on a foldable gadget of its own. There are a plethora of Apple patents that indicate the company is interested in folding screens.

There is still a rising market for foldable smartphones. Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 Bespoke Editions were released simultaneously by Samsung, allowing customers to customise their foldables with a variety of colour options. Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 with twin screens is also available right now. There is no doubt that the finest foldable phone is under development.

As far as I know, it hasn’t happened yet. A new product is often not released until the firm is confident in its ability to outperform the competition. (The iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone, but it certainly beat the competition.) Patents and concept drawings from independent designers show that the iPhone Flip/Fold might be a big hit for Apple.

This iPhone Flip guide compiles the most recent information and theories. A better image of what is expected to be the most innovative iPhone yet will become apparent over time.

Rumors about the iPhone Flip’s release date

Speculation abounds as to when the iPhone Flip will be released, but the most recent reports suggest that it will happen in 2023 or 2024.

Ross Young, a display expert with a proven track record of predicting Apple product launches, believes the company will unveil a foldable iPhone in 2017. According to him, the most probable launch date for such a gadget would be around 2024.

The display area of the iPhone Flip

The first foldable iPhone, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, would feature an 8-inch screen. A 7.6-inch screen would be bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which has a 7.6-inch screen when folded up. The 8.3-inch iPad mini’s display is approximately the same size as an 8-inch screen.

Alternatively, a third rumour states that Apple and LG are collaborating on an OLED foldable display panel with a 7.5-inch diagonal.

What will the design of the flipped iPhone look like?

A fold-out hybrid tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series and a clamshell flip phone design like the Galaxy Z Flip range have been studied by Apple, according to Jon Prosser. It’s still early in the development process, so it’s possible things might change, but according to those sources, Apple plans to use the clamshell form.

Some of the things Apple may be exploring for its foldable, such as any future devices that may abandon the clamshell form in favour of something new, have been revealed via patent filings.

The “joint operating mode” described in a new Apple patent in 2020 would enable a single-screen gadget to be complemented by a magnetically-connected secondary display. Using this mode, devices might join together to form a single shared environment, however this isn’t related to the original concept of a single folding panel. Even more recently, PatentlyApple discovered a new patent that displays a flexible display that folds closed but still leaves a tiny strip at the bottom open for quick access to alerts and contextual information. Think of it as a tiny version of the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.

As far back as 2020, we can see Apple’s thoughts on foldable designs, including a patent for a three-fold display. Further back in time, in 2016, we can see a patent from MacRumors showing a vertically folding phone similar in orientation to the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr. This is one of the first foldable iPhone patents.

As a result, designers are imagining new ways to present the iPhone Flip/Fold in concept art. Take, for example, this 3D model provided by the YouTube channel #iOS beta news, which resembles a Galaxy Z Flip clone in terms of its thin bezels, centre hole-punch camera cutout, minimal outside display, and vertical orientation. Although this is only a preliminary concept, it’s one we can see Apple really making.

As well as having a folding screen, LetsGoDigital’s latest iPhone Flip concept design has a thinner bezel and an external cover display.

Also, ConceptsiPhone has posted a video of an iPhone Flip design that looks a lot like an Apple version of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. For the first time, the iPhone 12 has an in-screen Touch ID sensor and a narrower notch than the iPhone 12. Although the M1 chip is a stretch at this point, we’ll have to wait and see if Apple sticks with the A series naming scheme for future iPhones to see if it’ll be a more likely candidate.

In a separate tweet, Antonio De Rosa shared photographs of a foldable iPhone that combines certain features of the Galaxy Z Flip, such as an exterior notification screen, with a few distinguishing features of the iPhone. This includes flat corners, a camera array like that of the iPhone 13 Pro, and — in keeping with Apple’s speculated intentions for the iPhone 14—no notch.

Cupertino won’t be able to do it all by itself when the first foldable iPhone appears. According to several reports, Apple has been in negotiations with both LG and Samsung to offer flexible screens for its next devices for the last three years. According to Korean media, Samsung Display provided Apple panel prototypes for testing in March 2019.

The Surface Duo is a two-panel device, similar to Apple’s original folding iPhone, which does not use a flexible display. Perhaps Cupertino has already developed a prototype of this design, according to Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech. However, a hinge has been included into this gadget, which means that when it is held out in front of you, the two displays join together without any issues, according to Prosser.

Flip your iPhone: Longevity

In October 2020, we noticed a patent for Apple enhanced version of the iPhone 12’s ceramic cover for the iPhone Flip. It would have four layers: a cover layer, a hardcoat layer, an inner surface, and a transparent support layer. It would be particularly built for a flexible display. Even sapphire or glass might be used as a support layer for added strength.

There have also been rumours that a “self-healing material” layer might help the display “repair” itself, reducing the visibility of scratches and dents.

A foldable iPhone from Apple is far from certain, but Prosser’s research shows that a variety of scenarios are possible for the company’s first folding phone. If Apple isn’t thrilled with a gadget with a single, foldable screen, dual-screen technology may win out. Flexible panels are now popular, but dual-screen hardware may win out.

As recently as February of 2020, an Apple patent surfaced that outlined a method for folding a touchscreen panel without damaging the panel. Instead of a sharp bend, screens within hinges would bend outward gradually. It’s hoped that this design would help the display last longer by making it more durable. However, it’s worth pointing out that the Galaxy Z Flip has a similar design.

Apple has recently submitted a continuation patent that explains how to make the iPhone Flip more resistant to cracks by using a crack-proof display.

How much would it cost to buy an iPhone Flip?

How much does a foldable iPhone cost? It’s the most difficult question to answer since the price has never been a part of the few foldable iPhone rumours (another clue that the iPhone Flip will launch later rather than sooner) and because the device’s cost will mainly rely on how Apple designs it.

To put that into perspective, consider that the Galaxy Fold launched for $1,980 with a 7.3-inch tablet-like display when unfurled and a small 4.6-inch screen on the exterior. With a 6.7-inch screen covered in Ultra-Thin Glass for enhanced durability and priced at $600 less, the Galaxy Z Flip was unveiled only six months later. The Z Fold 3 launched at $1,799 and the Z Flip 3 at $999, maintaining the same pricing disparity as the most current Galaxy foldables.

It is possible that the pricing of a smaller and less expensive foldable might be comparable to the $1,099 iPhone 13 Pro Max. There is little doubt that the price of Apple’s folding iPhone might surpass the cost of the company’s more traditional smartphones if it is meant to be used as a tablet when necessary, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Flipping an iPhone: A contest

If Apple doesn’t release the iPhone Flip until 2023, its competitors will have a head start on the foldable phone market. Now on its third iteration of the Galaxy Z Fold and a new Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung’s foldable phones have apparently sold well, and the price may be a significant factor; the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the first folding phone available for under $1,000.

In the event that Motorola keeps working on the Razr as a foldable phone, the iPhone Flip will have some stiff competition when it launches, even if no other Android phone manufacturers follow suit.

Another contender seems to be pulling out of the contest to create the greatest foldable device. One of Google’s Pixel Fold projects was said to be significantly ahead of Apple’s own plans for the device. While one storey suggested that Google was abandoning the Pixel Fold, later sources indicate that the project is still on and the phone will be released by the end of 2022. We’ll have to wait and see whether anybody other than Samsung can make a foldable phone work.

Apple has never been the first to market with any of its iconic products; instead, it has launched iPods, iPhones, and iPads only after determining that they improved upon previous models. With the iPhone Flip, Apple seems to be following a similar strategy.

Using the iPhone Flip, you’ll be able to

A lot remains to be discovered about Apple’s foldable iPhone ambitions, but one thing is certain: Whatever approach the company adopts in producing its first folding phone will certainly determine the future of the industry.

Despite the fact that Samsung was the first to introduce a foldable phone with the Galaxy Fold, the firm is continuing to experiment with alternative designs in order to better understand what consumers desire.

When it comes to mobile phones, Apple has a history of setting trends with each new model it releases. The company was the first to do away with the headphone jack, do rid of the bezels, and introduce the notch, all of which were influenced by previous iPhone models. The iPhone 12 in 2020 will likely serve as the majority of people’s first exposure to 5G, despite the proliferation of 5G devices.

Finally, the future of foldable technology and the smartphone industry as a whole depends on Apple’s strategy to making a foldable iPhone.
